It would be ideal if you never had to use a digital camera repair service but the chances are that you will have to find one during the life of your digital camera. If you have bought your camera carefully then it should have a lengthy digital camera repair warranty. Even if your camera is still within the warranty period for digital camera repair then you still have to ensure that you meet the requirements of the warranty.

No digital camera repair warranty covers damage caused by abusing the camera or incorrect use. You also need to check what paperwork you have to send off with your digital camera repair for it to be carried out under warranty, such as the sales receipt and completed warranty card. Your warranty will provide instructions for how to obtain a digital camera repair and the procedures to follow. It is important to use a digital camera repair service authorised by the particular manufacturer of your digital camera to ensure that you do not incur any extra costs. A digital camera repair carried out under warranty will not cost you anything unless the equipment needs to be returned to the factory, in which case there are shipping charges.

One of the most frequent problems that require a camera to be sent to a digital camera repair service is a zoom lens that will not zoom, because the lens is out of alignment. This may have been caused by rough handling or some type of impact which will not be covered by the warranty. If your camera is not able to focus then it will not fire and may print out system error or not turn on properly. It is a relatively simple process for a digital camera repair service to realign the zoom lens or reset the zoom barrel guide pins that may have been pushed out of their slots, and this will then enable the lens to focus and zoom. The cost for this form of digital camera repair will vary from service to service but it should be a relatively quick job, as long as the digital camera repair company has the correct equipment onsite. It is worth checking before you decide which digital camera repair service to use that they have the necessary equipment and expertise to carry out the repair and not have to send it away.

The best digital camera repair services have skilled digital camera repair technicians that specialize in repairing certain types and brands of cameras, hundreds of specialized tools to properly service your camera and some may also have custom test jigs to help complete repairs more effectively and efficiently.

The joy surrounding the birth of a child is something that is so amazing that it is hard to put into words. Once the birth of a child occurs a parents life is forever changed. From that moment on a parent will have to base every thought and decision around their child. The joy that is associated with child birth is something that many children do not realize until they become parents themselves. If you wish to share the happiness and pride that you felt on the day your child was brought into the world you should consider purchasing a newborn photo throw blanket.

To forever treasure the birth of their children many parents develop scrapbooks or photo albums to pass on to their children. These items are great way to show a child what their life was like when they were younger and the joy that they brought you. While scrapbooks and photo albums are nice, there is an accessory that will make a traditional scrapbook or photo album so much more. That item is a newborn photo throw blanket.

A newborn photo throw blanket is similar to a traditional photo throw blanket; however, it is often themed with the birth of a child. There are many newborn photo throw blankets that only display the birth picture of a child; however, they can be personalized to include so much more. A popular newborn photo throw blanket design is one that is similar to a birth announcement. There are many blankets that can include a babys birth photograph and a small birth announcement right alongside that photograph.

Using a real photograph is the most preferred way to create a customized newborn photo throw blanket; however, it is not the only way. In addition to using a real birth photo, it is also possible for a baby face drawing to be developed. Many photo blanket designers can transform a color faded or blurry photograph into an amazing drawing. The drawing is often combined with other birth information such as the date of birth, size, and weight of a child.

A newborn photo throw blanket can be made right when your child is a baby or it can be made in time. As long as the photo is clean, free of marks, and easy to see it is possible to turn an old or new birth photo into a beautiful newborn photo throw blanket. Could you imagine the surprise on your childs face when one day in the future they go to open that box of memories that you left for them. A newborn photo throw blanket will not only allow your child to treasure their own birth, but it can be preserved and passed down through future generations. Imagine the legacy you created simply by ordering a newborn photo throw blanket.

For any level of photographer, it is essential to keep gear protected. M-Rock has developed a compact line of camera cases to suit any photography need. The wide range of styles and sizes of camera cases comes equipped with some vital features for protecting expensive camera accessories.

Water Resistance. Weather and water can be public enemy number one to an active photographer. M-Rock has gone great lengths to ensure their camera cases can withstand the elements. The M-Rock triple protection system on every case consists of a rain-flap, zipper and front buckle. And if thats not enough, all cases come with a protective weather jacket that serves as a dry bad in inclement weather.

Rigid Structure. Delicate photography materials cannot stand heavy pressure. M-Rock camera cases are constructed with water resistant material, plastic paneling, and thick closed cell foam. The result is a rigid structure that protects all the gear inside.

U Shaped Cradle. A large problem for photographers can be space restrictions and placement of lens within the camera case. Unlike competitors, M-Rock components are universal and can be placed in just about any imaginable combination. Larger M-Rock camera cases come with a rigid foam U-shaped cradle to hold lens while in transit. The U-shaped cradle can be placed on any of the camera case walls to perfectly hold any size lens.

Quality photography relies on quality gear and components. Great lenses are an investment for photographers that should be protected with quality camera cases. M-Rock has thought of all the essentials in their line of camera cases to protect your lenses and keep you shooting.

Like other portable consumer electronic devices digital cameras use batteries as their power source. In this article we will describe different battery technologies and their cons and pros. Armed with this knowledge you will be able to take into consideration the battery used when purchasing your next camera.

A camera usually supports just one type of battery either a disposable battery or a rechargeable one. The exception is cameras that are powered by standard AA, AAA or similar batteries. In most of these cases disposable and rechargeable batteries can be used interchangeably.

There are two battery types:

disposable batteries: can only be used once. They usually have a standard size and shape such as AA, AAA and so on. You can buy these batteries at most stores and once they are empty you simply dispose them (please help keep the environment safe and clean by disposing batteries only to special battery disposal containers).

rechargeable batteries: can be used multiple times. Some rechargeable batteries have a standard size and shape such as AA, AAA and so on. Such standard size batteries can be used anywhere that a disposable battery can. More often than not however rechargeable batteries have a proprietary shape and are compatible with just a few specific cameras. Once a rechargeable battery is empty you can place it in a special charger that will recharge it. The time it takes to recharge a battery, the number of times it can be charged and the life time of the battery are dependant on the technology used to build the battery.

There are pros and cons to using disposable or rechargeable batteries. The main advantage to using a disposable battery is that you can always buy a few to have with you to replace the ones that are empty and you can always get one in a store close-by in case you are stuck with empty batteries. The disadvantages to using disposable batteries are the cost of buying new batteries every times your batteries are empty, the capacity (in most cases a disposable battery will not last as long as a good rechargeable battery). On the other hand rechargeable batteries require only one purchase. When the battery is empty you can simply place it in its charger and after an hour or so you will have a fully recharged battery. The disadvantage is that if you run out of batteries during a photo shooting session or somewhere away from home or a power supply you can not just buy another battery. The solution to that problem is to buy one extra battery and to always carry it with you fully charged.

If your camera uses standard size batteries such as AA or AAA you can have the advantages of both disposable and rechargeable batteries. You can always use disposable AA or AAA batteries with the camera but you can also get a rechargeable AA or AAA battery and use it when convenient.

Rechargeable batteries technologies:

Different technologies are used in building rechargeable batteries. Look at the battery itself to find out what technology was used in most cases it will be written on a small sticker on the battery or somewhere on its packaging. The following are the most common technologies and some of their pros and cons:

nickel cadium: one of the oldest technologies. These batteries are inexpensive, they can be recharged fast and many times before they lose their capacity. On the downside they have a low capacity and have a memory effect a memory effect means that the battery can not be recharged to its full capacity unless it is first fully discharged. This can be problem since in most cases you will want to make sure your battery regardless of its current state is fully charged before going on a photo shooting session. Some charges solve this problem by first discharging the battery and only then recharging it to its full capacity.

nickel metal hybrid: this technology is an improvement of nickel cadium. These batteries capacity is much higher up to 50% more. Although it still has a memory effect it is less noticeable than in nickel cadium batteries. On the downside these batteries can be charged less times before losing their capacity and they also discharge faster when not in use.

lithium ion: A new technology that solves many of the nickel technology problems. Lithium ion batteries have a higher capacity than even nickel metal. They have no memory effect at all (and thus regardless of their current state they can always be recharged to their fullest capacity). The downside is that they are more expensive than nickel batteries.

lithium polymer: the latest technology. These batteries have all the advantages of lithium ion and more. They have an even higher capacity and can also be easily manufactured in any shape or form. This allows for much smaller and lighter high capacity batteries and for batteries shaped to better fit the camera design.

In conclusion when choosing a camera and considering what batteries it uses you should first make a choice between disposable and rechargeable batteries. If you choose to get a camera that uses rechargeable batteries you should try to choose a battery that uses the latest technologies like polymer or lithium unless you have some special considerations.

In this article I am going to give you some tips about photographing your products for your catalog. The images you use in your catalog are the most important features you will be deciding on. The images sell your products. The text and everything else are important, but if the images are not well-produced, then your sales will suffer.

There are professional product photographers and using them will ensure that you have the best photos for your catalog. However, this does not come cheap. If you decide to do it yourself, you can save a lot of money. Just be sure you are confident that you can produce high-quality photos for your catalog products.

The first rule of good catalog product photography is to photograph your products individually. Group photos of products do not sell product as well as individual images. Again, it is more costly to do this because of film, printing, and layout concerns. You can save money by photographing your catalog products in groups as long as you understand that this method could also cost you money in reduced sales.

Choose appropriate backgrounds for your products. You want the product to stand out in the picture, not the background. If your product is white, use a dark background. Add contrast to your photos. Take several photos of each product so you can decide later which ones are the best of batch later.

If you are skilled with PhotoShop you can enhance the images of your products. Shadowing is a great method to use when you are displaying expensive products like wine, jewelry, or artwork. If you do not know how to use PhotoShop, you may want to get a professional graphic artist to touch up your photos for you.

Why all this trouble for just a few pictures? You want to present your products in the best light, no pun intended. You will not be there with your catalog to speak to the customer. Your pictures must speak to the customer for you. By taking the extra time to make each and every photo a virtual showcase for your product, you make the potential customer want to see more of your photos, then buy your products.

To the consumer, the quality of the image equates to the likely quality of the product. When people see an image that is pleasing to them, they want to possess it. If you want them to possess your product by ordering it, you have to make them want it. Your images are the best way to do that.

You can use a high-quality 35mm camera or a high-quality digital camera to photograph your products with. Personally I recommend you go with the digital camera if you are going to photograph your own catalog products.

Digital cameras and images are much easier to deal with and the quality is as near to perfect as you can get. Touching up the pictures of your products is not necessary, but you would be surprised at how much it can improve your results.

The bottom line is this. No matter where else you might cut corners, do not cut corners when it comes to the photos of your catalog images.

It is often the simple things that spoil an image. Using simple techniques and a little care, you can easily give you images the attention that will do them justice. The materials used in printing your images play an important factor in the quality of the finished print.

Printer: When buying a printer think about the materials that youll be using. If your are going to be printing your images in large format buy a printer that can handle rolls of photographic paper. These printers are usually more expensive, but great savings can be made when buying paper.

Paper: Photographic paper comes in many different sizes and textures. It doesnt do any harm to test a few different papers from different manufacturers to see which one suits your needs.

Ink: When buying inks for your printer I would strongly recommend that you buy from your printers manufactures. Third party inks will give you great savings but may not be suited for your printer.

When buying a printer, photographic paper or inks, it is advisable to plan well in advance. If you are only going to print a small amount of images it may be better using your local photo lab. If youre planning to sell a large amount of images, your own printer will be very valuable. Having your own printer will ensure that you can process orders immediately after getting them.

In todays world, offering a speedy delivery can be the difference in making a sale. Using a third party to print your images may take a week or more before youll get your images back. This will not be good for your business.

Presentation.

When you are happy with the quality of your printer you now need to consider presentation. Placing an image in to a cheap frame will not do anything for your prints. Presentation is all about giving your images the impact they truly deserve. Before you print your images start thinking about presentation.

It is often very effective to add a white border in Photoshop before printing. If you decide against Photoshop I would recommend that you mount your image before framing.

When finished printing match your prints to your computer screen. If you think you have a problem with your final print you may need to calibrate your computer. This is a common problem with a lot of people printing at home. Most advance photographic software comes with a basic calibration program, which can be simply used in improving results.

Printing Tips:

Before you print your images do a final check to make sure colours are perfect and that there are no marks on your image.
Make sure that you have the right quality settings on your printer.
Always use the best printing options available on your printer.
If you are using heavyweight paper load the paper one sheet at a time. This will avoid clogging.
Once you are happy with your printing, allow your prints to rest for 24 hours, place a sheet of plain paper between each print when storing your images.

Other printing tips: Most ink and paper companies claim that their product dry instantly this means that they are dry to touch. If you print you own images there are a few important points to follow before framing.

1 allow your prints to rest for 15 minutes after printing.

2 after 15 minutes place a sheet of white paper over the print use standard paper dont use photographic paper. The paper acts as a sponge absorbing the outgoing gases from the printing process. Allow this process to continue for twenty-four hours.

3 if the plain paper is crimped once removed, repeat the process for another twenty-four hours. If not, your image is ready for framing.

.

2006, All Rights Reserved

Family portraits are an important part of our heritage. They preserve history. They record family growth. They document changing styles (some good, some not-so-good!). More than that, however, portraits seem to call to us and will garner our attention almost immediately when we enter a room. These, among many other reasons, are why family portraits continue to be so popular. Its also why portraiture is one of the most popular areas of study at photography schools.

While almost all get looked at, only a few spark the phrase, Thats a good picture! Why is it that since most photographers go through photography school, only some family portraits gain compliments while others seem ordinary? The posing strategies and selections of photographers play a big role. Photographers tend to get into ruts taking the same styles of portraits over and over. When you feel this happening to you, its time to shake things up with new ideas about posing families.

Natural Sittings (and Settings) Are Popular

First and foremost, keep things light. The days of stiff family portraits where everybody is in exactly the same pose are over! Today, more natural-looking poses (even formal portraits) are what give that noteworthy appearance.

Let the family members be themselves. Keep your eye behind the lens, always looking for an opportune shot as family members interact with each other. Youll also want to encourage natural laughter and smiles rather than forced cheese smiles.

Creative Family Poses

Get creative! Use your imagination and a host of props or natural settings to capture moments that are truly unique. For young families, consider placing baby in a bassinet with siblings and parents looking at baby, not at the camera. Perhaps toddlers could play at the edges of brooks or streams with mom and dad.

Other memorable (not to mention adorable) shots could include toddlers chasing bubbles or butterflies and toddlers playing with puppies, bunnies or other small (but tame) pets.

For families with older children, head outside! Fabulous portraits can be created with the family standing behind a fence (smaller kids sitting on the fence). Try a portrait of all silhouettes or of the family gathered on the front porch sipping lemonade. Families can even lounge at the edges of ponds or brooks for creative shots.

Move!

While theres a place to use your tripod, it may not be during a family portrait shoot. If you feel your posing is getting stale, toss the tripod and try alternate angles. Shoot from above or to the side or experiment with lighting. If the family isnt sure of exactly what they want, offer to take a variety of portraits and let them choose the style they like best once they see the results.

When you break down the barriers that squelch your creativity, you free yourself to produce your best work yet. Youll enjoy the sessions more, and your clients will be thrilled with the results!

S3 AND S5 TWO GENERATIONS OF ULTA-ZOOM CAMERAS BY CANON

In common practice, the comparative test aims at distinguishing the advantages of one producer over another within one and the same price category and functional group. That is why models by different producers representing the same section of the market are taken for observation. Canon cameras are usually compared with their group-mates from Panasonic, Sony or Nikon. But we at DigiCamFriends.com ( http://www.DigiCamFriends.com ) have agreed to take another way and get to know what obvious innovations may be found in the Canon PowerShot S5 IS (hereafter, Canon S5) in comparison with the Canon PowerShot S3 IS (hereafter, Canon S3) that used to be extremely popular.

Lets imagine we know nothing about new features developed by Canon for the new model S5 that appeared after the Canon S3…

PHYSICAL VIEW

Canon models of S series, being different from another Canon PowerShot subclass (that is models of A-series), are characterized as amateurish but with some skills of professional. This is for report or art-report shooting, but not for the motionless photos, something like a tree and me type. From this point of view both models have a very handy design.

In fact physical view of the camera has not been changed, except first- the enlarging of the movable screen from 2 to 2.5 inches and second- the replacement of one of the control buttons. And while the latter novelty hardly seems to be pleasant, the first one fits quite natural- its become more convenient to take photos with a larger screen.

Pic.1: Canon PowerShot S3 IS and PowerShot S5 IS; front.

Pic.2: Canon PowerShot S3 IS and PowerShot S5 IS; rear.

Pic.3: Canon PowerShot S3 IS and PowerShot S5 IS; movable screens.

OPTICS

The cameras have the same lens construction type with identical settings (the market interpretation of the term construction the quantity of the optical elements and its groups). Unfortunately, there was no information found on the manufacturers Web-site mentioning that these lenses are identical; so I wont insist on theoretical view point, but make a display with some photo examples.

Example 1 : Shots with max. depth of field (the aperture priority mode, the shutter is closed down; Flash is on; ISO80 sensitivity; the white balance Flash). The distance between the objects is about 15-25 cm. Auto focus on the handle of the cup. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.

Example 2 : Shots with min. depth of field (the aperture priority mode, the shutter is absolutely open; Flash is on; ISO80 sensitivity; the white balance Flash). The distance between the objects- about 15-25 cm. Auto focus on the handle of the cup. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.

These cameras are recognized among the majority of digital cameras for equally good color reproduction and quick focusing on the objects, even if they are trying to escape from your camera.

Example 3: Focus on objects moving to and fro with 12x optical zoom in. On the left, a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.

It doesnt make much sense if we start making a display of numerous examples of similarities between these cameras. Well stop making trivial comparisons of their features and proceed to noting peculiar and individual characteristics discovered during the experiments.

THE IMPERFECTNESS OF THE LENS

Practical optics has very little in common with the geometrical sums in the physics lessons that students solve while learning about cameras as a kind of equipment. But however accurate the calculations may be, even the most carefully developed ( and rather expensive) model of the lens is not completely perfect. For example, there can be chromatic aberrations, when the objects on the image are colorfully haloed. Test results show that both cameras have the same level of chromatic aberrations. Surprisingly, in spite of the progress of the competitors, Canon hasnt manage to overcome this problem when developing the Canon S3 into the Canon S5, even after the evolution within internal toolkit. On the whole, in my point of view, the number of drawbacks of cameras for ultra-zoom class is high.

Example 4 : chromatic aberrations are the colourful halos around the bridge footing. This example also displays the difference of the sharpness of the objects in the photo taken by different cameras, but well discuss it later. At the top is the whole shot with the testing area highlighted. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5. For both cameras we set semi-auto Landscape mode with completely closed aperture, 12x optical zoom in.

SHOOTING CLOSE-UPS MACRO MODES

Macro-shooting is not an easy task for a camera, designed as the the mater of landscape photography. The technical characteristics for shooting bugs and spiders are just opposite of those for shooting sun-sets and mountain landscape. There are numerous items that can be evaluated to identify the macro capacity of the camera. In particular, there is a famous test based upon not simply measuring the distance from the lens surface necessary for focusing, but making a photo of a small object wthin the whole shot. The smaller the object, the higher degree of macro capacity of your camera has.

We agreed to experiment upon the monetary unit of our country coins of different values.

For both the Canon S3 and the Canon S5, macro-shooting is available in two different modes: macro and super-macro. We had expected to get the similar results, but it turned out that, with the Canon S5, the borderline between these modes suffers influence of its predecessor. While macro mode of the Canon S3 enables you to take a photo of 5 coins, that enlargement is not enough for the Canon S5 for its limit is 6 coins (shooting of 5 coins requires super-macro mode).

Example 5: On the left, a shot taken by the Canon S3; on the right, by the Canon S5.

After experimenting at length with super-macro mode we managed to take the image of a single coin. By the way, the coin is 15.5 mm in diameter. Unfortunately, this test cant be characterized as complete. It might be possible to take photos of much smaller objects on the whole screen provided there is extra lighting ( the cover around the lens prevented the addition of more light…in fact the lens was resting on the object; we had to build up a flash reflector, manually-set ISO200 sensitivity, and at last lighten the image with an image editor program.

Example 6: Super-macro mode. On the left, a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5. The lack of light forced us to set the sensitivity to a high ISO level, and the bright halo around the coin is nothing but a flash, spread all over the tightly-stretched piece of white paper.

SENSOR AND ISO SPEED

Both cameras have sensors of 1/2.5 size, the number of effective pixels (pixel value) is 6 8 megapixels. Nowadays 8 megapixels for that type of sensor seem to be the limit (A greater number is quite possible, though it might be not economically feasible).

An important characteristic of digital camera, referring to its sensor, is ISO speed. The manufacturer gives the ISO speed scale from 80 to 800 for the Canon S3 and up to 1600 for the Canon S5. Lets experiment to evaluate data in low light condition.

Example 7: ISO80 speed. At the top is the whole shot with the testing area highlighted. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the the Canon S5 (shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the highlighted areas are enlarged in an image editor).

Example 8: ISO100 speed. At the top is the whole shot with the testing area highlighted. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right by the Canon S5 (shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the highlighted areas are enlarged in an image editor).

Example 9: ISO200 speed. On the left is a shot taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5 (shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the highlighted areas are enlarged in an image editor).

From the examples above we may see that an ISO speed within 80- 200 scale makes good results for both cameras, although the results with the higher ISO speeds are not so clear.

Example 10: ISO400 speed. Same cameras and same conditions as above.

Example 11: ISO800 speed. Same cameras and same conditions as above.

While shooting with ISO400 sensitivity gives equally good results, the setting of ISO800 sensitivity enables the new internal algorithm of noise reduction in the Canon S5 to come into play (Heaven knows how it happens either via auto or programmed mode). As for ISO1600 sensitivity, it is absolutely useless; even the above mentioned noise reduction mechanism doesnt cope with the noises. Though the manufacturer doesnt hold this option back from customers.

Example 12: ISO1600 speed of the Canon S5. The same image patch, as in the previous examples (the shutter speed priority mode, external light; for better observation the marked out areas are enlarged in image editor).

By the way, during the experiments with ISO speed, another peculiar feature of both cameras had been noticed. They manage to operate the white balance mode equally good, except when the white balance mode should be set manually at high ISO speed (800 and 1600). The noises of the sensor seem to appear in the program accepted averaged color, that is white.

It is not a great obstacle to overcome for usually the candlelight is used at such a high ISO speed (the dim light of a table-lamp and dingy street-lamps, for example) and you may choose the appropriate manual setting. Still, it is strange why such an imperfect algorithm inherited from its predecessor didnt go through any changes.

FOCUSING ON THE DISTANT OBJECTS

It has already been mentioned (discussing chromatic aberrations) that we get different results when focusing on distant object by Canon S3 and Canon S5. To check the fact we shot a series of landscape images with 12x optical zoom in. The semi-auto landscape mode was set to provide completely closed aperture along with the other auto-set characteristics (in other words to realize the greatest possible depth of field). To meet the non-stop character of the experiment, the test shots were taken at once without choosing the object to focus on but as soon as the camera informs that its ready to shoot (as soon as it has focused on). In addition, to avoid different views of nature by the cameras, we set Spot focus mode. Let me show you the effect referring to the series of shots of a TV tower.

Example 13: Focusing on distant objects with 12x optical zoom in ( Landscape mode, Spot focus mode). At the top is the shot of the landscape without enlargement; in the middle- the same landscape with 12x optical zoom in (with highlighted testing area). At the bottom to the left is the image by the Canon S3, at the bottom to the right, the image by the Canon S5 (both shots have been enlarged in an image editor).

The results show the pre-eminence of the Canon S5 working in auto focus mode. Probably, the Canon S3 might have shown not as bad results, if it were used in manual focus mode, but then it would break the conditions of the experiment.

TOOLKIT

Sharpness is available for both cameras, being called Rezkost in Russian texts. It attracted most attention among the other settings, because in a way it may be regarded as the equivalent of the internal noise reduction option (it doesnt reduce the noise but highlight the edges, that make impression of a high-quality shot). To test that no changes had been made within the algorithm, we took a number of shots with 400ISO speed (the noises are already conspicuous, but they do not prevail).

Example 14: Internal algorithm of increasing Sharpness for the Canon S3 and the Canon S5. At the top the photo with highlighted testing area. In the middle, a shot to the left, taken by the Canon S3 without increasing sharpness, a shot to the right, taken by the Canon S3 at a high level of Sharpness. In the row below the same operations with the Canon S5.

Based upon the examples above, we may say that this algorithm as well didnt go through great changes: such a delicate way of increasing sharpness with a few artifacts left. It seems as though the manufacturer had not intended to update toolkit for a new model.

THE ALGORITHMS OF COMPRESSION

Its a pity, but neither of the cameras deals with RAW files (despite the Canon S5 sporting a new feature which is characteristic of a professional camera; that is, the flash hot shoe for external flash); all the image files are saved in JPEG format with various degree of resolution and compression (both are manually set). To compare the internal algorithms of compression we shot 2 series of photos in Landscape mode (to provide the best depth of field on the small far details). The center of the shot had been taken for the testing area to eliminate possibly the influence of the imperfect optics; all the changes were made in BMP format in order to make JPEG artifacts more conspicuous, and at the same time, not to add any extra while preparing shots for publishing; all the image patches were enlarged in the end.

Example 15: The comparison of the internal algorithms of compression for the Canon S3 and the Canon S5. At the top- the photo with highlighted testing area. The shots with the increasing degrees of compression follow below. On the left are the shots taken by the Canon S3, on the right, by the Canon S5.

The above examples display that the Canon S5 inherits from its predecessor the Canon S3 the visual effect of compression even for the high-quality images. I would recommend either increasing the super-quality of JPEGs (by any possible way) or contribute RAW-format (TIFF/ BMP- any of the formats that compresses without faults); the cameras really suffer from the lack of one!

FEATURES

Among the pleasant innovations for Canon S5, such have been noticed (though not checked):

*extensive work with the same set of batteries (170 shots in stead of 110 according to the results of the standard test by the manufacturer);
*a hot shoe and sync-contact for external flash.

SUMMING UP

AFTER PRACTICAL WORK WITH BOTH CAMERAS, WE AT DIGICAMFRIENDS.COM ( http://www.DigiCamFriends.com ) MAY CONCLUDE THAT SOME CHANGES INDEED HAVE BEEN MADE FOR THE NEW MODEL. THIS CAN BE OBSERVED IN SUCH OPERATIONS AS FOCUS ON DISTANT OBJECTS WITH HIGH OPTICAL ZOOM OR WITH HIGH ISO SPEED. THESE NEW FEATURES HELPED TO CORRECT UTTER DRAWBACKS FOUND IN THE CANON S3, IN COMPARISON WITH THE SUCCESS OF THE SIMILAR PAIRS OF CAMERAS BY OTHER MANUFACTURES. THE QUESTION IS WOULD YOU AGREE TO PAY FOR THESE INNOVATIONS?

Almost anyone that can point a camera and take a picture can take a portrait picture. There are a few things to learn about when it comes to this type of photography that will help you understand the basics of what makes a good portrait. In reality, you do not need a studio or some special equipment and technical resources to take an outstanding portrait photograph.

A portrait is taken to define the likeness of a person or people and even more so, it is a picture of someones face. However, in general the word has a deeper meaning when it is shown in a photo. Portrait photography is understood to be of good quality and not only does it capture a persons physical look on film, but will also show a characteristic in the manner that is pleasant to the eye, attractive and a unique mannerism of the subject. A very well done portrait will at least contain one element that reveals what the subjects personality and attitude or any other traits or features that is natural to the person.

One of the benefits of doing portrait photography is the conversation that will take place. It takes an understanding and skill of human nature to be able to take a good portrait. It will require engaging in a conversation with the subject you are working with, find a suitable topic that will spark and interest and a reaction. Common ground is a great way to start when building a rapport with the person, the more you know about the person you photograph, the easier it will be to take a great quality shot. It is important for the subject to be at ease with you so their natural characteristics will show through and appear natural on film.

As a professional photographer who has shot for everyone from National Geographic Adventure to Modern Bride, I take the same care and planning in photographing personal trips as I do work assignments. It could be my South Pacific honeymoon in a bungalow at the Orient Express Bora Bora Lagoon Resort or a weekend car escape with the family in Colorados Rocky Mountain National Park.

Whatever your travel plans, here are a few pro tips to help you capture memories of a lifetime.

Pack Smart

When I hit the road, I take both my professional digital camera and my smaller digital point-and-shoot (perfect when I want to be less obtrusive, like in Scottish pubs). Make full use of your lenses-wide-angle lenses are ideal for photographing family picnics and museums, wherever you want to include as much foreground as possible. Telephoto lenses arent only for photographing wildlife and sports-they also make the best portrait lenses, too.

Power Up

Bypass alkaline batteries in the field and stick with long-lasting Energizer e2 Lithium AA batteries for your digital camera. Youll not only save money with lithium batteries (they last up to seven times longer) but weight as well (theyre a third lighter). It might not be critical at the family reunion, but it made a difference for me when I covered the recent Explorers Club Expedition up Africas highest peak-Mount Kilimanjaro. Since they also perform well in extreme temperatures, I didnt have to worry about environmental failure. Energizer e2 Lithium batteries have another plus-they were specifically engineered to meet the energy demands of high-tech devices from MP3 players to wireless headsets.

Likewise, shop smart for memory cards, and always have a few extra. If all your vacation is stored on a single memory card or stick and it fails (which it will sometimes), youve lost everything. Spread the risk across several cards and invest in high-quality 512MG and 1G cards by a reputable company such as SanDisk.

Click Away

If you want your pictures to improve dramatically, the easiest way is to get closer, much closer. Put on the wide-angle or zoom all the way out and then move into the scene. Kids roughhousing on the lawn? If youre not getting bumped, youre not close enough. Gorgeous columbines in a mountain meadow? If you cant smell them

Another easy way to get memorable images is to use new angles. How about climbing on top of your pickup to get that photo of the family barbecue? What about taking a photo while youre on that roller coaster? Sure it will be blurry, but isnt that the point?

Be creative. Photography is one of the few artistic outlets open to everyone, and in the age of digital cameras and lithium batteries, if you can imagine it, you can shoot it. On a typical assignment, Ill shoot over 1,000 photographs in a day. On a typical family trip, I take the same amount. Why? Because it doesnt cost me a penny more, and the more photos you take, the better photographer youll become. So go ahead, click away.

The older I get, the more I am thankful for the great gift of photography and the ability we have to take pictures of lifes most special and ordinary events. Perhaps I am aware of the value of pictures because my father was a photographer and so I was raised around cameras and pictures all the time. Im not sure, I just know that I am convinced that everyone would do well to make pictures a more prominent thing in their life.

I talk to many people who have trouble remembering the details of their childhood or of some of the most significant events of their lives. This saddens me greatly because I do not think that it has to be this way. I think that regardless of whether or not you have a lot of pictures from your past, anyone can start now to take pictures and make memories of their life from this point forward.

Taking memorable pictures doesnt mean that you have to be a professional photographer or that you need to have years of experience. All you need to have is an eye for capturing the memories that happen everyday in your life. A great first step is to head out and get a couple of disposable cameras. If youre surprised that I am encouraging you to get dispoable cameras rather than a real camera, then read on. I suggest this because disposable cameras are an easy and cheap way to begin practicing taking pictures. Dont jump into purchasing an expensive camera until you are comfortable taking the most basic pictures.

If you know anyone that is a bit more experienced with taking good pictures, hook up with them and see what you can learn. Other than just plain practicing taking your own pictures, the next best thing you can do is to join with other photographers and learn what you can. You might be surprised how quickly you learn to take great pictures that will become great memories for you and your family.

Grab an album to begin collecting the pictures you take. As you gather pictures I think that youll begin to really value them in a whole new way. I think youll value pictures as you realize that life is short and goes quickly and that you will be greatly aided in remembering by taking pictures. So grab a camera and start taking pictures. The rest of your life could easily be changed.

Everyone loves coffee mugs, but who wouldve guessed that they would be commonly used as a decoration. Not just any coffee mug, but rather photo mugs are the best of both worlds when it comes to having a functional mug with a touch of personalization.

Photo mugs are often given as gifts and feature the likeness of someone special, which may be a friend, relative or even a pet in some cases. A good example of the perfect occasion for giving photo mugs as a gift would be a birth announcement or childs birthday celebration. The parents of the little one would have their childs picture designed for use on the outside of a mug. Upon placing the order, the photo mugs would be created and could then be distributed to friends and family. This would be a wonderful way for family members to always have a photo of their favorite new addition sitting on the coffee table. In addition, personalized photo mugs can be presented with candy inside and given as a special gift.

Because photo mugs are designed for decorative purposes, many individuals do not actually use them to drink from. Prolonged washing may cause cracking or could result in the photo fading. To avoid this from happening, many people use photo mugs as pen and pencil holders that are strategically placed on the living room coffee or end table. Commonly made of ceramic, just as with any standard mug, photo mugs are available in a variety of base colors with various border designs and/or whimsy patterns.

With continued advancements in technology, many photo centers now allow customers to bring in their favorite picture on paper or disc and order photo mugs on site. Many developers allow the customer to crop the photo, add borders and/or perform touch-ups when placing the order. A number of online photo studios offer the same convenience as local studios, but both will ask the customer to allow for additional delivery time on personalized orders of photo mugs. Common photos that are used would include special occasions, favorite pets, friends and family members, etc.

In addition to commemorating special events or people, personalized photo mugs and other products are a terrific way to earn some extra money. In many cases, especially with personalized photo mugs, these products are used as knick knacks that are more for visual purposes than actual use. These products are extremely popular at craft fairs and through other special order opportunities.

Is the feeling of a soon-come-crashing birthday of your beloved, a close relative or a friend and the following headache about what to choose as a gift familiar to you? There are so many pretty things in store, but most of them seem a bit trivial and when you ask your friends for advice, they all have the same answer, similar to what probably everyone else would suggest, which signals Hey, dont buy it. If you find yourself in a situation like this, and you would like your gift to have a personal touch, think photo mugs.

Why can a photo mug make a nice present? Because the companies that produce photo mugs can place any photo that you like on it. It can be a picture of the person that you are going to give a present to, or your own funny little face, or maybe a sweet picture of you together, or of your child or a pet. Moreover, if you add a pinch of creativity, you can bring in a picture of some object that has a meaning for both of you, something that can remind you of a special or a funny moment in your life.

Secondly, photo mug producers are ready to put in a customized text on the other side of the mug to supplement the picture, which can be funny, romantic or your self-expression can take some other shape.

And thirdly, because it is a mug and a photo in one and it is functional. You can enjoy your drink, a picture and a memory, at least of the moment and the person, who gave it to you.

Furthermore, the gift mugs that are advertised and sold online are in most cases made of ceramics. They are dishwasher and microwave safe, which means the picture will not fade and the text will persist as well after you put the cup in the machine or the oven. However, if you go for a stainless steel travel mug, that can be not dishwasher or microwave safe. The selling companies recommend delicate hand washing, but guarantee that dye-sublimation ink, which is used for printing the picture, is bullet-proof and will never fade.

Besides creating your own design with a personal touch, the mugs are beautiful from the point of view of delivery time. They can be obtained as quickly as in 24 hours. Of course, if you want to order it to arrive on Christmas Day or in time for any other big holiday, you should think about it in advance. Some companies would advise to place orders by December 14.
And then again, there is a discount system that is applicable to the amount of photo mugs purchased. The more you buy, the less you pay per cup. You might like to acquire a round of mugs to present it to all the members of your family with different photos and different words to accompany. That will surely liven up and stimulate the party.

A handbag is an item that is essential to many women. In fact, almost all women carry a handbag or a purse. There are many women who search multiples stores and catalogs just to find the perfect handbag. Selecting a handbag to purchase can be a difficult task, especially for those who are looking for something particular. What many women fail to realize is that they can create their own customized handbag. A photo handbag is one of the most popular customized purses on the market today.

A photo handbag is a handbag that displays a single image or a whole picture. Photo handbags are complicated to make. They can most easily be obtained by hiring the services of a professional. The photo handbag selection will all depend on the designer in question; however, there are some common photo handbags styles are in high demand.

Before selecting a bag style many individuals already have the photo that they would like to have constructed on the bag in mind. If you are interested in purchasing a customized photo handbag you will want to have a specific photograph in mind if you dont already have one. Selecting the photograph before the bag will allow you to get a better idea as to how each bag will look with your photograph constructed on it.

Bucket and tote style handbags are the most popular types of bags that can be turned into a photo handbag. These handbags are likely to come in different sizes. It is likely that the larger the size of the handbag the more expensive it will be to have a photo constructed on it. In addition to the bucket and tote style handbags, it is possible to have a photograph constructed on a diaper bag or a beach bag.

It is also possible to purchase a smaller photo handbag. Petite handbags, also commonly known as coin purses or cosmetic bags, are a popular accessory among women of all ages. A cosmetic bag or a coin purse can be used to carry money, makeup, or other small items. Coin purses and cosmetic bags are often combined with a larger purse. As with all other photo handbags, you will be required to select the picture that you want your coin purse or cosmetic bag to display. It is not uncommon for a coin purse or a cosmetic bag to have a photograph constructed on both sides; however, as the purse owner you will have the final say.

No matter what style of photo handbag you select, you should be able to have your bag customized to meet your desire. This often allows you to not only select the photo to be constructed on the bag, but the exterior border and interior purse color as well. With the ability to design a photo handbag just about anyway that you want there is no reason why you shouldnt at least consider owning one.

Thats right. Who could say that theres no chance that your hobby could also be the foundation of your first business venture? There are a lot of people out there who are in need of a good photographer to capture images of their sons wedding, their daughters graduation or their very own wedding. Why couldnt you be the one to supply your photography services to their needs?

For the transition of photography from hobby to your very own business, there are several tasks that you have to accomplish first.

Market Your Photography Skills Sell yourself, in other words! Let people know about what you can do in the field of photography, why they need your skills and why they should hire you. Make sure, however, that you charge them reasonable rates since youre still more or less an amateur in the field of photography.

To effectively market your photography skills, dont be afraid of spending a little money on posting ads in the classified sections. Dont stop there but post about your photography business in as many places as you can.

Join Interest Groups This could be the local photography club in your community or the association of young photographers in your school. It could also be a Yahoo Group that you could easily join.

Usually, these groups are able to hold regular or annual exhibits of their works and it wouldnt hurt to expose to the world the beauty of your works in photography.

Join Photo Competitions Two things that you could enjoy when joining photography competitions: fame and fortune. Both are equally important. Fame would do wonders to your career in photography because it would let the world know about your skills and winning a photography competition may also offer the prize of having an apprenticeship under a world famous photographer. And when it comes to wealth well, when did extra money ever hurt?

Offer Your Skills For Free to Government Projects The government is always on the lookout for professionals who are willing to work for free and you should take advantage of this. Offer your photography skills for free because this would give you the opportunity to show them what you got.

Offer Samples of Your Work to Newspapers and Magazines This is just like joining a photography competition. When you offer samples of your work to newspapers and magazines, youre improving the chances that youll get noticed by the people who matters.

Although we cant say that the road to victory is easy, never give up, never stop taking pictures and youre sure to go far!

re to go far!

For most photographers the most important factor in their photography is the sharp quality of their images. To get the very best quality we need to know which lenses to use and the best time to use they. There are several lenses on the market today that should become part of our every day tool.

Standard lenses: are the most common use on today market. A standard lens has a focal length between 40 mm and 60 mm, which can be used for all types of photography. Its the most flexible of all the lenses and should remain on the camera body at all times.

Telephoto zoom lens: for any one interested in wildlife photography a telephoto lens should become your standard lens. With a focal length of between 60 mm and 300 mm, this is also a perfect lens for the sport enthusiast. The telephoto lens allows you to capture the far away object and can also be used for landscape images

You can use this lens for close-ups, but be careful with your composition. Large areas of the image will become blank and could destroy your picture.

When using a telephoto lens always make sure that you have the camera supported with a tripod. If you cant use a tripod try using a beanbag rest the lens on the bag when taking your images.

Wide-angle lens: is the choice of most landscape photographers. They allow you to include as much of the scene as possible when you look in your viewfinder with a wide focal length of 17 mm to 40mm. The wider the lens you use, the closer you need to be to an object of foreground interest, to add impact to your photography. Ultra wide-angle lenses have a focal length of 8 mm to 28 mm.

Macro lens: is perfect for ultra close-ups shots with an average focal length of 100 mm. If you are looking to take images of small objects, such as: flowers or insects, a macro lens should become part of your camera bag. A macro lens will also allow you to take unique abstract images. By using a wide aperture with a macro lens on natural shapes can create the perfect abstract image.

Be careful with focusing when using a macro lens, it is tough on a good day and can be impossible if the weather is windy.

* Can I develop my own photographs?

Yes, you can. By having your own darkroom, it is possible that you can develop your own photos. You first need to set up your own darkroom and buy darkroom equipment.

* What equipment and supplies do I need in a darkroom?

A darkroom requires many kinds of equipment to get you started in developing your photos. It is expensive, so you should prepare a sufficient amount of money to get into this hobby.

The darkroom necessities are:

Enlarger
Negative carrier
Lens Board
Lens
Safelight
Print trays
Timer
Thermometer
Funnel
Chemical jugs
Developer, stop, fixer
Printing paper
Mixing rod
Print squeegee
Dust brush
Graduates
Negative Storage
Dark Bag/ Dark room
Film tank
Film reels
Film

Above is the equipment you need for a darkroom. However, you still need additional equipment to set up a complete darkroom above and beyond the former, which includes:

Paper cutter
Color print drum
Motor base for print drum or rotary processor
Color head or filters
Color printing paper
Color chemicals
Jugs and graduates for color chemistry
Color print viewing filter kit
Light table
Dry mount press
Mounting tissue
Bulk film loader
Film cassettes
Darkroom sink
Water board
Film drier
Print drier
Toners
Jugs for toners
Exposure/color analyzer
Repeating printing timer
Photo Oils/pencils
Print tongs
Hypo clear, photo-flow
Easel
Polycontrast Filters
Film clips
Print washer
Blotter book
Projection scale
Antistaticum
Canned air
Loupe
Cropping guide
Film washer
Cotton gloves
Spotting dyes
Spotting brush
Contact printer
Grain focuser

* What makes a good darkroom?

A good darkroom should be light-proof, spacious, have dry and wet areas, have ventilation, have bench space, be organized, have a safe light, and be comfortable to work in. Since you will be working with chemicals, it is important that you have enough space to maneuver to avoid tripping over dangerous chemicals.

Did you every pick up a newspaper or a magazine where a single image is used to tell a story. This is known as photojournalism. Photojournalism can fall under all subjects of photography but the image needs to be news worthy to end up being published.

There are two types of photojournalism.

The first type is where an image is used to illustrate a story. Many feature journalists work closely with photographers and commission them to produce images that will be published with their articles. There is no limit to how many images can be used. This is usually the photo editors decision.

The second is where an image is used to tell a story without any words. One single image may be used or as many as ten images are often used in magazines. If you can write do so; it will be an advantage when you submit some images.

One of the most important qualities of a photojournalist is his ability to react quickly when he comes along a scene that may be news worthy.

Other than the obvious, here is a list of items which may be news worthy.

Impact pictures.
Pictures of the Environment
People.
New buildings.

If you are serious about photojournalism build a collection of images from your area. Many of these pictures will not be immediately news worthy but may be down the road. Take pictures of all the factories and buildings in the area. Some day a factory may close and you may not be able to get to the scene. Also have plenty of pictures of local businessmen and politicians.

Some photojournalists are lucky enough to get assignments from newspapers or magazines, most have to follow or find the news to make a living.

The world of digital photography has made the work of the photojournalist a lot easier. Being able to view, scan and e-mail images to a publisher instantly is a massive advantage.

The work of a photojournalist can be extremely harsh taking pictures in all kinds of extreme conditions and in very dangerous situations. Many photojournalists die each year in war zones and at different natural disasters around the world.

We live in a world, where todays news is forgotten tomorrow and the need to get the images quickly to the publisher is so important. If you have images that are news worthy dont delay sending them to a news agency or publisher. They wont stay in the news very long.

The very first thing to do if you want to make money from your photographs is learn how to create great images. In the world of fashion photography sharpness sells. The subject of how to take a great image is too complex for this article, however the following points are important:
Have a good camera with manual controls.
Know how to use it and use it well.
Have a good eye for detail, composition and color.
Always be ready to grab an opportunity when it presents itself.

If you happen to be driving through amazing Canadian roads and come across a deer (or a bunch of them), get your camera! Watch for sunsets, moonrise, cloud formations and tree shapes. Keep a sharp eye on your pets for weird and funny poses. Visit flower shops and exhibitions. Flower pictures are many photographers bread and butter and they can be easily photographed. Greeting card markets love photos of flowers, gardens, sunsets, sky scrapers and cute photos of animals. Wildlife and nature are great for calendars and geographic magazines as well as educational fields.

Diversity and quality are the biggest aspects in photography. The wider the range of topics you cover, the more likely you will get a sale. Anyone can make a good living from stock photos. Freelance photographer Dmitri Markine sells just as many photos taken from his own backyard as from exotic and far away locations. If you love travelling, put your holidays to work for you. Travel guides, brochures and websites could be possible markets for your photos. Take photographs everywhere you go!

So what to do with that fantastic shot? The edges are sharp as razor, while the clarity would bring joy to many publishers; the main thing to aim for with any image is to sell it to multiple markets. This is taken care of if you submit to a stock agency. They sell to large corporations as well as small business. Its a perfect way to gain some exposure and see whats out there. You dont have to be responsible for selling your own stuff, but to have more sales, its always good to try to sell the photos yourself (websites, galleries, etc).

It is important for any photographer to keep a portfolio of his work to show. You never know when youll meet a prospective buyer who wants to look at your work. No one will not be impressed if you have to dig through a dusty desk to scrape them together or use email to send them to clients. Have a printed portfolio as well as a web based portfolio. When you do get a sale, dont charge a large amount just because the picture only took a few minutes of your time. Youve spent years learning your craft. You spend a considerable amount on equipment, advertising and education and your photos are worth a decent figure.

If you really know what you are talking about and can take a fantastic shot, think of submitting it to a publication or a magazine, along with all the details of the precise equipment you used and a step-by step guide of your procedure. A bit of a challenge perhaps, but worth the effort. There are many other markets to consider too; all kind of magazines, newspapers, travel guides and books. So grab your camera and dont stop shooting! Photography is an art and the more you practice the better you will become. No famous photographers became like that overnight. We all spent sleepless nights perfecting our craft

Photography is one of the beautiful definitions of an art that expresses the picture portrayed. The three components linked with Photography are artist, medium and the art work. The three components are inter-related to each other.

Many people found photography to be a mere reproductive medium and hence the reason photography really struggled for one and half centuries.

Photography is definitely art work, it needs a lot of talent and imagination to portray and expression through a simple portrait. It is an art of recognizing the minutest effects on reaching the heart of the picture. It is not only clicking the photographs, but it is about giving them a sequence a background a picture, liveliness and a medium. A Photograph artist brings the Pictures to live once they are clicked. It is a beautiful art of recognizing the most behavior of nature, person or a situation.

There have been many artistic photographic giants in the past like Henri Cartier Bresson, Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange who proved themselves in the field of photography. Today there are many photographic artists like those of by the expressionofwendy.com who make their work known to the world through their finest art of photography by portraying it on the website.

Photography as an art has taken its place and fame in the market today. There are many people around the world who are crazy about Photography. There are people who want to choose these professions because of their artistic interventions. Photography has not diminished rather it has found a way to win hearts of many people.

Photography being an art is also a challenge; it is depicting the true self out of a non-living thing. For example, it brings life the picture that can be so dead. When we think of the simple image of nature, photography can bring those simple image of nature alive by adding colors and definitions to it to make it alive in the eyes of the viewers.

Photography is the best thing, it is the imagination of head and it is the imagination of thoughts. One can get easily engrossed in the line of photography. There are many photographers who spend hours throughout the day, in defining the simple clicks and making them alive.

Adding colors, adding a sense, adding a life to something that is non-living is an art. Photographs of various natural instincts bring to our imagination of photography being a defined art. Many at times Photographs depict a lot about a person, that person themselves are not aware of.

Photography as an art has just been recognized in the recent years, over the year people have accepted the secrets of photography and what it can portray. Photography depicts the known from the unknown; it is an art of going to the depths of understanding the vitality and the nature of any picture.
Photography also is a beautiful art of imagination, it is an art of dream and it is an art of bringing the dream to reality. The major sequence of photography can be seen through various examples given by the photographers of the past.

Isnt fun and exciting to take pictures? As for photo lovers it is their passion have a good collection of pictures. However, for professional photographers, which taking pictures is their profession, they are oblige to have a good photo shot in order for them to have more clients.

As for travelers who love to discover new places, photography is their perfect companion, because the photo itself provides them tangible memories of their trip, they can also show to their families and friends the exciting places they have been, the wonderful scenery, and the great people they have met.

Some say that photograph is considered as a message, because it conveys a statement, an impression, or an emotion. You as the author of your photograph you are expressing this message in a clear, brief, and effective way. But how will you do it to be able for your viewers understand your message? Like any ordinary message, first you need a subject. The subject is the center of attention and it is usually placed in the forefront of the shot. This can be a building, a natural panorama, or some abstract form. As a true message, if you have a subject you must be able to have a context to define or to discuss your subject. This can be your second element, the context, which is frequently the background. The context gives the subject relevance, presence, location, or other interest. With the help of these two main elements, which are subject and context, or the foreground and background, you can now tell to your viewers what exactly the message of your photo.

As for photo artists it is their way to express themselves in art they consider that photograph is a piece of art because it captures the spirit of a subject and evokes emotion.

Due to the fast change in our technology, cameras are one of the many technologies that take their way to the next stage. Back then storing and printing photos is a time consuming process theres no room for on demand printing. In this new digital world, where digital camera is born which the main function is to capture and store images in a solid-state image sensor instead of traditional film.

By using the process so-called digital photo imaging; you can now transform your digital memories into photographs by yourself with the aid of photo printers at your own convenience. Nowadays, digital cameras are fast replacing traditional analog photography equipment, which is the reason why digital photo imaging and digital photo printing are the new and very in demand services today.

Flower photography is one of the most popular forms of photography. You can photograph flowers growing in the wild, flowers that are cultivated in greenhouses and gardens, or photograph cut flowers and arrangements indoors,in a studio setting.

Both film and digital cameras work well for flower photography.

Any lens can be used in flower photography, from the ultra-wide angle lens (17mm),to the super-telephoto lens (300mm or 400mm),but if you are serious about closeup flower photography, buy a macro lens.

Most point-and-shoot digital cameras come with a built-in macro mode.Your digital cameras macro feature lets you get very close to your subject, and that is important when photographing flowers.

A tripod is essential because it reduces the chance that youll get a blurry image. Many tripods, even when fully collapsed, are too high for photographing low growing flowers. That is why you need to get a tripod that allows you to get close to the ground. A special kind of tripod, called a tabletop tripod, is great for photographing small flowers and other objects.

Use a color-saturated type film. A film with an ISO 50 or ISO 100 will give you bright colors. Dont use film faster than ISO 400 for flower photography.

The ideal lighting for photographing flowers is the soft, diffused light of open shade or a cloudy day.Night photography is also an option.A flower photo can be very attractive when illuminated by flash.Wind is the most annoying factor when photographing flowers,so be patient and wait for the wind to die down before you take a picture.

Whether youre photographing flowers indoors or outdoors, consider unusual angles.Try photographing your flowers in early morning light and photograph them again in late afternoon light.Use warming filters to create mood. Add water droplets to the petal of your flower and give it that dewy, morning look. Experiment with backlighting and try to highlight the transparency of the petals.

Dont forget that, although most people love color photography, creative flower photography can be in monochrome as well.

The only way of developing successful techniques in flower photography is to practice, and also learn more about flowers.Botanical gardens and nature preserves are some of the places where you can not only take photos of flowers but also learn more about them.

Photographing pets can often be a difficult proposition. Add water, glass reflections and the low lighting of an aquarium environment, and youve got the recipe for one extremely difficult photo shoot.

But it doesnt have to be that hard. Armed with the following tips, you can get great photos of your fish in just about any situation.

1: Get a tripod.

Tripods are usually used for non-moving subjects. But they can be immensely helpful when photographing fish, even ones that are constantly moving. Low light levels lead to slow shutter speeds. So anything you can do to stabilize the camera will be of tremendous help. The best way to photograph moving fish with your camera on a tripod is to loosen the levers on the tripod so you can move the camera freely left, right, up and down but the camera will remain in position if left alone.

2: Get your fish acquainted with the camera.

Now that you have a tripod (since you faithfully followed the first tip), set it up in front of your aquarium with the camera mounted on the tripod. Now leave it. For as long as possible several days would be ideal. The purpose of this exercise is to get the fish used to seeing the thing youre constantly moving around, pointing it at them and making noises. When theyre comfortable with the sight of the camera, theyll be more relaxed and less prone to dart around the tank or hide.

3: Use a digital camera.

Digital cameras allow us to just take the picture without worrying about whether were wasting the film and processing money on a shot that wont be good. When you can focus on getting the best shot possible, no matter how many tries it takes, youre on the right track to get the shot you want.

4: Turn off the lights in the room.

Ambient light causes reflections on the tank glass that may ruin a perfectly good fish photograph. Eliminate all sources of ambient light that you can, and be very aware of any reflections as you shoot. If there are some reflections you cant get rid of, try putting your body between the light source and the glass to shield the tank from the light.

5: Clean the glass, cut the pumps.

Turning off the aquarium pumps before you shoot is an excellent way to clean up your shots of particles and bubbles in the water column. and if you happen to have a planted freshwater tank or reef aquarium, this will also prevent the plants or corals from swaying in your picture, turning into a blurry mess.

Cleaning the glass is probably the most overlooked step to aquarium photography, and quite possible is responsible for more ruined photos than any other issue. Remember, just because you dont see it now, doesnt mean you wont see it in the picture. Amazing how that happens. So clean the glass well, every time, before you pick up the camera.

6: A Bonus!

Have fun. Aquarium photography can become an interesting and challenging hobby all its own. Have fun with it, experiment freely, and be sure to share your pictures online!

Taking great portraits is as much about people skills as it is about technical ability, or using the latest and greatest photographic equipment. Sure, refining your technical skills and knowledge may expand the extent of your capabilities, and using superior equipment may indeed boost your edge. But, unless you can first see through your subjects eyes, and understand her as a unique individual, and then build rapport with her so you can unveil and accentuate her finest qualities, your portraits will remain mediocre at best. Some lessons learned along my journey as a photographer may help those who choose to follow.

1. If using a tripod, compose your portrait and then take one step just to the side and forward from the camera. Do not look through the viewfinder as you capture your subjects image. This allows you to make eye contact initially with your subject, and then direct her in mood, expression, position, and the angle of gaze you are aiming for. When your subject interacts with your camera, the result can be a cold or lifeless rendering, but when you engage your subject through eye contact, expression, gestures and words, the result can be a warm and candid reflection, charged with mood or emotion.

2. If you are not using a tripod, you really should redouble your effort to maintain constant interaction with your subject. Many photographers tend to keep their eyes in the viewfinder of the camera, but this leads to your subject interacting more with the front glass in your lens than with you. Again, you do not want the sterile and lifeless rendering that most often comes when the camera serves to isolate you the photographer from your subject. Interaction with an inanimate object (your camera) can never be a substitute for interaction with another human being (you), when your goal is to capture the essence of your subject, and reflect the attitude and emotion she was feeling at that moment in time.

3. Allow your subject to be herself. A little girl dressed up in fairy wings for a special picture is very cute, and I suppose there is a place in this world for cute. But, contrast this with the little girl who just loves to dance. You put her in her everyday clothes, stand her in front of a plain backdrop, put on her favorite music and say to her, can you show me how to dance to this song? You should have no difficulty in capturing timeless expressions there. Now imagine a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy whose true passion in all of life is sailing. You dress him up in a tailored suit; formally pose him in front of a low key backdrop, seated in a Chippendale chair, and use classic loop lighting. What would be said of this portrait years later? Who was this guy, an executive? But just suppose, you photographed this same guy in his favorite t-shirt and blue jeans, at the helm of his beloved sail boat, on a beautiful late afternoon, just as the boat was coming about? What would be said of this portrait years later? This was Charlie, doing what he loved most! That was such a glorious day. The point is, keep it honest. Fantasy can be cute, but your subject being herself, years later this will be much more meaningful.

4. Allow your subjects expression to be honest. A frown or a grimace that is genuinely felt can be more interesting than a smile that is forced. I try to never just pose my subject and then say, Okay, now smile for me. If you want your subject to smile then tell a joke, put on a face, or perhaps merely smile at her and she will smile back at you. People generally tend to reflect in their face what they see in yours, but in my experience this is not always so. Nevertheless, interaction with your subject is the key. That being said, the next time you have a difficult subject ask him to tell you a joke, to bring out a smile, if thats the expression you are after. If you are a professional, you know that smiles sell, but if youre an amateur, you are under no pressure to sell, so make your portraits interesting. Not everything in the world is to smile about.

5. Direct your portraits. Take control of the composition of your portraits! Do not be afraid to tell or show your subject what you want. Sometimes showing is best. I often find that actually demonstrating a pose I have in mind, works better than trying to direct my subject through words alone. If you are photographing a group, your life will be easier, if you arrange and pose the adults first. Then, work your way from oldest (or more mature and settled) to youngest of the children. The point to remember is, as the photographer, you should take charge of the shot. The success or failure of the portrait will be your responsibility, so take charge.

Engage your subject to establish and build rapport with her, to take your photos to a higher level. Make your portraits more meaningful by keeping them honest, and natural. We all know a fantasy photo can be cute, and a formally posed portrait can be graceful and dignified, if that is your subjects personality. But, a portrait that is true to the subject is always more meaningful. Allow your subject to be herself, and never force an expression. Learn to take charge and direct your portraits and you will move far ahead in your journey as a photographer. Practice your people skills with each portrait you take. People skills are the prerequisite to all else, if you want to take great portraits. Good day and happy clicking!

All About Combination Digital Cameras

Digital cameras are starting to become less attractive than all in one digital cameras which can often do many things other than just snapping photos such as record video, and play music. This certainly comes true in the Panasonic digital camera models. In an effort to show this wonderful technology, this article will look at one of the combination digital cameras.

The Panasonic SV-AS10 D Snap is a combination of four devices in one: a 2 megapixel digital camera, a camcorder, an MP3 player, and a voice recorder, all in a slender silver wafer that weighs as little as a feather. This is one handy swivel lens that offers a quick and easy way to take self portraits at a moments notice while the menu system is accessed by way of a small orange track ball that makes flipping between layouts easier than using a computer mouse.

This cool combination digital camera comes with a 2 megapixel CCD and features a ten-second self-timer; many color modes, a macro mode, a built in flash, and the aforementioned swivel lens. A 4x digital zoom gives you focusing power comparable to any basic digicam. This cameras exclusively designed image processing system delivers lush, and aberration free images in resolutions of up to 1600×1200.

The camcorder function of the Panasonic SV-AS10 D Snap is also robust, and it allows you to shoot movies at 320×240 of up to one minute each at 10 frames per second. Videos are automatically encoded in QuickTime and can be immediately transmitted to your computer and sent by e-mail by using the included cable. Movies can also be edited using QuickTime Pro and modified using Windows-compatible applications or converted to AVI files.

The SV-AS10 can play sound files, not just MP3s but recordings made in WMA and AAC formats too. The voice recorder function will go taping as long as sufficient memory space remains. Basically, the Panasonic SV-AS10 D Snap isnt so much an exemplar in any single department but rather an impressive blending of technologies that is available at a surprisingly modest cost. Just think, just about every camera company is now making these.

When it comes to digital photography, you cant go wrong with these combination digital cameras. They take most of the work out of editing your photos for you as the simple settings can be arranged to do most of the work on your behalf. The rest of the work that you can do is completely up to you. If you like taking digital photographs, and editing them, you will love these combination cameras. It is like you can set the mood and take the pictures at the same time. Technology just keeps getting better and better

Many individuals are purchasing a photo blanket either for someone that they know or for themselves. A photo blanket is a great way to transform a traditional photograph into something so much more. A photo blanket is sometimes placed in a safe location and preserved for the future, but many individuals actually use their photo blanket when resting, reading, or watching television. If you are interested in ordering a photo blanket or you already own one did you know that you can order a personalized photo pillow to match your blanket?

If you are interested in purchasing a personalized photo pillow to go along with your photo blanket then you should have a number of options to choose from. It is important to remember that you should first find an individual or company who produces personalized photo pillows before fully developing your idea. This is because each company or individual may have different pillow products. The two most common types of pillows used to create a personalized photo pillow are large bed size pillows or small couch pillows.

When selecting a larger size pillow to use it is likely that your picture will have to be enlarged. If you would prefer not to have the picture enlarged or for some reason it cannot be done there are other alternatives. The company or individual making your personalized photo pillow may allow you to add another picture to one side of the pillow. Two pictures on one pillow is a great way to distinguish between the past and the present; however, it may increase the cost of the pillow.

If you are interested in purchasing a smaller sized pillow it is possible to purchase a couch pillow. A couch-sized pillow is great when trying to match a photo throw blanket to a personalized photo pillow. Since the size of the pillow is smaller, the price is likely to be less than that of a large size photo pillow. The size of the pillow often limits one photograph to the pillow; therefore, if you like the idea of two photographs on one pillow you may be required to purchase a larger size pillow.

A personalized photo pillow makes a great gift for special friends and family members. Although a personalized photo pillow makes a great gift it does not have to be one. You can purchase yourself a customized pillow to use or keep as a family memento. Photo pillows are great on their own; however, they are even better when purchased with a photo blanket.

If youre just starting out with a digital camera, or you are considering buying a new camera, and you like what youve heard about digital photography, you probably have a few burning questions about the technology. What replaces the film? Do you need a computer? What process replaces getting your pictures developed, and how can you store and view all your photos without having to print them off? This is a short guide that will answer these questions, and give you an idea about what your options are as far as storing, retrieving, and viewing your digital photographs goes.

When you take a picture with an optical film camera, you have a shutter opening for a fraction of a second, exposing photosensitive film to the light which is projected into an image by the lens, onto the surface of the film. The film stores a negative color impression of your image. Later it is fixed then developed into a positive true color photograph in a dark room (or these days, a compact machine which performs the same task.) When youre done, you get a copy of the fixed negative, and the true color photo. The principle of digital photography isnt much different. A microprocessor-controlled photosensitive microchip-wafer is programmed to become receptive to light projected onto its surface by a lens for a fraction of a second. The chip then digitizes that image into a sequence of tiny colored dots, called pixels. This information is stored as a numerical sequence, which is then recorded to the cameras memory. This is the important part. A camera usually has a small amount of on board memory, sufficient to store somewhere between 15 and 100 photos. The amount of space that a given photo takes up on the memory depends on a number of factors, but quite simply, the more detailed a digital photograph is, the higher the number of dots used to produce an image is, and therefore, the sequence of numbers representing those dots is longer. So, a high resolution digital photo takes up more digital space in memory.

The great thing about digital memory is that it can be written to, and read from not hundreds, but hundreds of thousands, or even millions of times, without wearing out. Because cameras only have a relatively small amount of on board memory, removable memory cards, termed flash cards have been developed to store larger amounts of data. While your camera may store 15 or 20 high resolution photographs on it, flash cards can store between a couple of hundred, and several thousand such images, depending on the digital capacity of the card, and the photo quality. A flash card is a thin wafer, between roughly 1/32 and 1/8th of an inch thick, and usually not much larger than an inch square. There are several different formats of these cards in common use, and they make up the bulk of common image storage devices. These include: Secure Digital; CompactFlash (1 and 2); Memory Stick; MultiMediaCard; xD-Picture Card; and SmartMedia. All of these are usually abbreviated to their initial capitals. Of these, SD and CF are the most common.

You may have heard that all computers speak in 1s and 0s before, and this is true. The standard unit for measuring digital data is bytes. For the purposes of this exercise, 1 byte is always equivalent 8 bits which are either a 1 or a 0. So a sequence of eight 1s and 0s is 1 byte. This is a very, very small amount of data. On a computer, a byte is only enough information to store a single character, such as the period at the end of the sentence. To make things easier, we work in kilobytes kB (1024 bytes), megabytes MB (1024 kB), and gigabytes GB (1024 MB, or 10243 thats 1,073,741,824 bytes!).

To give you an idea of scale, your medium or low resolution photographs on your camera are probably somewhere around 500kB, and your highest resolution photos are probably around 2.5MB. Commonly available flash cards range in size from 64MB, 128MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 5 GB, 6 GB, and a few 8GB flash cards have recently been released. This means you could store more than 3000 very high resolution photographs on an 8 gigabyte flash card, no larger than an inch square! The smaller cards are much more cost effective, with a 512MB flash card being between $10 and $20 new. The 8GB ones are closer to the $250+ mark, and represent the pinnacle of miniaturized consumer-grade data storage. And for one final trivial point of reference, computers these days come with hard disk drives ranging in capacities between 80GB, and 500 GB, which makes your computer an attractive option for storing your photos.

If all that didnt make a lot of sense to you on the first read, dont worry. Its a subject that gets more complex the deeper go in, and people devote their lives to its study. The beauty is that you dont need to fully understand it to use it effectively. For a handful of dollars, you can store many hundreds of images. You can reuse your flash cards almost indefinitely. They will eventually get a scratch or crack from the friction of being removed and used, and they are very sensitive to static electricity, so eventually, they will fail. For this reason, it might be a good idea for you, or a friend with a computer, to back up your photos onto a more resilient medium such as a data CD or DVD.

This brings us to the next point: Do you need a computer? The short answer is no, but it helps. Fortunately, the market has developed whole product ranges for people who wish to remove the computer from the equation altogether, recognizing the demand that existed for such options. These days you can buy high-resolution printers for the home capable of producing photos almost as good as what you can have developed at the pharmacy, that plug straight into your camera, or have an on-board card reader. If you have a particularly nice photograph you want professionally printed, most photo developers have facilities to do just that. All you need to do is bring in the flash card or camera that the image is on. What a computer does offer you is a convenient way to edit and sort your collections. You can still view your photos on the camera itself, and most cameras are capable of plugging into your television, thereby allowing you to go through your photos like a slide show.

Never before have we had the ability to store so much information so easily. There is a huge range of options for storing your photos, and if you most like the idea of a sort of digital reusable film, capable of storing hundreds or thousands of photos, then you can pick up a small handful 512MB flash cards, and have a photo album so big you could never fill it. But if you do, never mind: I hear theres a 16GB Microdrive on the way ..

..

What is zoom?

Sometimes when you take a photo you need to focus on one area in the picture frame. For example when you take a portrait photo you want to make sure the objects face fills the photo frame while when you take a group photo you want to make sure everybody is in the photo frame.

In to focus on that one area in the photo frame you can either physically move closer to the objects or use the cameras zoom feature. When using the zoom feature the camera (mechanically when applying an optical zoon or electronically when applying a digital zoom) enlarges that area to fit the full picture frame.

There are two types of zoom optical and digital (in older film cameras the only zoom option was optical). We will try to explain the differences between the two.

How does optical zoon work?

Optical zoom works by physically moving the cameras lenses and changing the focal length. By changing the focal length you can make objects appear bigger and fit the full photo frame.

When satisfied with the zoom position you can shoot the photo by simply applying the shutter button.

How does digital zoom work?

With digital zoom you actually use built-in software in the camera to define a portion of the photo which you are interested in. Once chosen the software crops the rest of the photo and enlarges the area you chose to fit the complete photo frame.

The process of enlarging the zoomed area is also known as extrapolation. The camera software needs to calculate new values for the pixels that were cropped in order to result in a full frame photo. The downside of this digital process is that the enlarged photo quality is lower than the original photo taken.

It is easy to understand the quality loss using an example. Lets assume that you have a 2MP (2 megapixels) camera. You point the camera and decide that you want to zoom in 2X. You run the digital zoom software and choose a 2X zoom. To accomplish this zoom the camera crops half of the photo and enlarges the other half to create a 2X zoom effect. In the process a 1MP area is discarded (the half that is cropped). The other 1MP area is enlarged in a process that copies every pixel once to generate a 2MP photo. Although the new photo seems to include 2MP it really includes only 1MP of information that was copied once. The result is a photo with a quality equivalent to a 1MP photo.

If you have used a 4X digital zoom in this example the result would have been a photo with an equivalent quality of a 0.5MP camera (the zoom area is 1/4 of the frame 3/4 of the frame would be discarded and the rest 1/4 would be copied three times to fill the frame).

Digital zoom significantly reduces the quality of the photo. If your camera does not include digital zoom you can always shoot the photo without zooming and then use a PC photo editing software to crop a portion of it and enlarge the rest. In fact using PC software is always the preferred method to built-in digital zoom since it allows you to try different zoom sizes, different zoom areas and different zoom algorithms while not losing the original photo.

So which one is better?

Optical zoom is superior to digital zoom. In fact from a practical point of view digital zoom should not be considered zoom at all. It is always better to apply digital zoom on a PC at a later time rather then when taking the photo using the cameras built-in digital zoom. When using a PC different sizes can be used and different zoom algorithms that can result in better qualities.

Know your cameras zoom

Some manufacturers claim the maximum zoom figure their cameras support without specifying if it is optical or digital zoom. This information is confusing as many consumers do not understand the difference between the two. For example if a camera supports a 5X optical zoom and 10X digital zoom advertising the camera as a 10X zoom camera is confusing 10X digital zoom can be done with any camera using simple PC software.

When buying a camera always make sure that you know what the optical zoom figure is and that it meets your needs. Ignore the digital zoom figure as it does not mean much and can not compensate for a camera with poor optical zoom.

Photography is the science of capturing light onto a piece of sliver halide emulsion or film. It is the art of recording an image in history which we find captivating, amusing, or thought-provoking and provides us with a true-to-life image.

Most pictures are made using a device called camera. A camera works somewhat like the human eye, capturing reflected light from objects, through a camera lens and focusing those light rays into an image. Traditionally, cameras recorded the image onto film and with technological advancements; modern day cameras store images in computer chips.

Photography has become an art form in many different types. Different types of Photography are: Artistic Photography, Photojournalism, Documentary Photography Portrait Photography, Event Photography, Family Photography, Nature Photography, Advertising Photography, Underwater Photography, Satellite Photography and more.

Making of a Memorable Photograph
A memorable photograph is a work of art. To create a beautiful work of art in a photograph, you must give importance on colors, images, emotions and have a proper planning.

In addition, the angle from which the photograph is taken can greatly influence the viewers understanding and emotional reaction. A normal, everyday item shot from a new angle makes ordinary moments interesting to the viewers.
Photography might not be considered beautiful at all, but a good one is certainly interesting. It is interesting because it shows something we havent seen before. For example- war or natural disaster photograph.

So if you are photographer having unique images and want to showcase your talent, you can join a competition and can send your photographs to various online competitions. To know more about the competition please visit our website at www.competearoundtheworld.com

Technology has indeed taken a leap with its advancement it opens a gateway for us to see the world beneath the waves, to capture the details which seemed to be impossible. Nikon one of the worlds leading brands in innovation has been established since the year 1917. With its dependability and consistency in the world of cameras it has been a market leader for years.

It is really the functionality of Nikon that has made them so desirable.

Camera controls are intuitive to operate, starting with the upper toggle switch on the rear of the camera, switching between wide angle and telephoto views. The image that you are focussing on is displayed on a small screen on the rear of the camera there is no eye piece as such, unlike the conventional cameras the you may have seen.

A little pressure on the focus/execute button makes the camera focus and calculate exposure a full press will cause the camera to take a picture. Most users will use this fully automatic mode.

The screen found at the back of your camera will allow you to review images taken. It makes it possible to review the shots that you have taken, and you can delete the images you do not want to keep. Use the lower toggle switch to step through the shots you have taken.

To quote the words of one professional underwater photographer, the Nikon D70 allows access to all of the most frequently used buttons and functions. Absent is the Depth-of-Field preview button, which I feel is rather useful but some may not even know exists!

Indeed, using the additional settings of AF-C (Continuous Auto-Focus) and Dynamic-AF area, one can shoot macro, wide-angle and even portraits by simply and quickly changing the lens. Youll see the benefit of this sharp and precise auto focus system when it comes to chasing and capturing very fast subjects.

Nikon underwater cameras are designed both for professionals and first time users.

So you plan to create a website meant solely for photography and topics related to photography? The most important thing to do for this is to gather and create useful and interesting content for the website. Remember that your photography website is going to become a marketing tool for your website, and so your website content should accordingly reflect this. You could actually create the web design for your photography website using the numerous software and templates available on the Internet. However, if you do use this software or template, you will not be able to create a unique website as anyone else can design a website using the same software or template, and will thus resemble your photography website.

So if you plan to have a photography website that is unique, you could enlist the services of a professional web designer. The web designer helps you create a website using his expertise. If you are not satisfied, you could make some changes to the designs he gives, to finally come across the best website designs. The additions and deletions you make in the website design all come in the web designer’s package, and he is not to charge extra for that work. The professional web designer may cost a bit but compared to the profits you make through the website, this fare can be considered negligible.

If you plan to write your own content for your photography website, remember to appeal to the emotions of your web site visitors. Make it a point to highlight the benefits of photography; like the benefits of digital photography, where you can do all the developing and printing of photos in the comfort of your house; without having to go to a photo developing shop. You could include programs for novices to organize photos into albums. By doing this, the visitor learns how to load the photographs into a community building web page that permits sharing of photos address books and chat rooms. Including photography tips is very important in a photography website, as everyone is always on the lookout for tips to make their photography better and more attractive. All these points make the visitor more interested in visiting your website to read the content of the website.

Of course, other content that could be entered in a photography website would be newsletters and articles of new products and services that are available for improved photography. The photography market is improving everyday, with new cameras, video cameras, printers and photo accessories coming out everyday. By including all this in the photography website, people will be informed about the developments in the world of photography. Since there are many photography contests going on around the country and the world, including information about this too is feasible for the photography website. In this way, people who are interested in the competitions may participate in these competitions. News about the numerous photography events going on too is another piece of information that could be included in the photography website. This way, photographers can visit these events to have a look at the work of others’ photography and thus make improvements in their own photography.

To make the content of your photography website more interesting and appealing to the visitors, you could consider including banners buttons and clip art in the photography website. However, avoid creating too big banners and graphic designs for the photography website, as visitors are not actually that patient to wait for these big files to download; they may leave the website for waiting for so long. Another thing to remember when creating a website for photography; is that it is vital to use terminology that the general public understands, as it is they who will be most visiting your website. Don’t use industry jargon and abbreviations, as a well-written site is one that entices sales and improves your search engine rankings. This can be done only if the visitor actually understands what is on your photography website!

As your photography website may also contain cameras and camera accessories for sale, it is important that you eliminate apprehensions of visitors buying online. You have to ensure them that you have a privacy policy, which they can easily access. Display your contact information on your website as this lends credibility and reassures potential buyers. Showing satisfaction of your products and services with testimonials from past clients too is an important part of your photography website. They are an excellent marketing tool, just make sure that the testimonials are legitimate. You could legitimize the testimonials by including the person’s title, business name and website too. Make your purchase process in the photography website easy for the visitor to understand. Keep the purchase buttons at easily identifiable points by using action words like ‘buy now’ on the buttons. This is sure to give an increase in the sales of your photography equipment and also more visits to your website! So keep all these points in mind when creating a photography website and see the popularity of the website soar!

When shopping for a digital camera, there are a few things that you should consider. It is not only to get the cheapest digital camera or the model with the most functions. Check out my list and than go and find the right camera model for your special purposes.

Size
Small is beautiful. Todays digital cameras are sometimes so small, that they fit into the breast pocket of your shirt easily and are still fully featured so you get the most out of the camera in almost every situation. Just imagine taking a picture of a wonderful sunrise when your are on your morning run or the happy smile of your kids when you pick them up after school. With a small digital camera you dont have to lug around heavy equipment, you are always ready to take the picture of your life.
But too small could be a nightmare for someone with large hands or big fingers. In this case it is not practical and the fingers could cover the lens, the internal flash or could not work the tiny buttons to select the diverse functions, a modern digital camera offers.

A larger, heavier digital camera is useful when you want to do more serious work. Think about taking pictures where the internal flash is disabled and you work with longer shutter speeds. A heavier camera is easier to hold steady and it can better compensate the tine movement when you press the shutter button.

System
there are many different kinds of cameras on the markiet today. The consumer has the choice between an ever increasing number of brands, but mainly his decision is based on what what he wants to use the camera for and what his past experiences with photography are.

Viewfinder cameras
this is the most simple system on the market. The viewfinder is located in the upper left corner of the camera (seen from the rear) and presents a picture that is slightly offset to what the camera really sees. When you are very close to an object, the difference in view can be dramatic.
This type of digital camera works very good for snapshots as well as for most photographic needs of the average person. Disadvadvantages are the fixed lenses, the lack of influence you can take on the picture (e.g. sharpness, focus, light).

Some more advanced models also use the small LCD monitor as a viewfinder. The advantage here is that the picture you see on the screen is the same that you will take with your camera. You have good control of what you will put into your picture. Disadvantage witht his type of display is that you cannot preview the pictures in a brightly lit environment. Taking pictures in brought daylight is sometimes difficult as you try to hold the camera stready and also shade the lcd.

Bridge cameras
this type of camera is more heavyset than the usual compact digital camera. Usually it features a fixed lens with a good zoom factor. Ranging from wide angle to telephoto, you can cover most photographic challenges with these models. They offer a trough the lens view finder, which gives you a correct impression of the photo you are going to take, regardles of focus length. The picture is projected on the CCD chip in the camera and projected on a small monitor that is either inside the camera positioned like on traditional cameras or on the back panel of the camera body.
These cameras are usually more capable of changing photographic parameters and are used by people who want to do more than the occasional snapshot.

Digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex)
this is the most advanced type of digital camera on the market today. It works very similar to traditional SLR cameras, but using the digital process instead of film. You can choose different lenses for every possible purpose. Whether it is a wide angle lens for landscape photography or a small telephoto lens for doing portraits or close-up work. The lenses are interchangebel and you sometimes even get compatible lenses from thrid party manufactures that are of similar quality, but lower in price. The picture is reflected into the viewfinder via a mirror (this is why its called reflex). When you release the shutter to take the picture, the mirror is moved away, the shutter curtains open and the light is directly sent to the CCD chip. A small LCD screen on the back panel of the camera is used for doing a first check on picture quality and for setting the different features and options of the camera. Digital SLR cameras are usually used by professional photographers and high level enthusiasts.

Memory Bigger Is Better
The advantage of digital cameras compared to traditional ones is that you can shoot as many pictures as the memory chip allows. Pics that turned out to be low quality can easily be discarded and again you have room on your memory card to take new pictures. As advantageous as it is, this circumstance leads to taking more pictures than with traditional cameras and as the resolution of the digital cameras increases from year to year, the need for memory increases. Therefore it may be useful to exchange the memory card that came with the camera with a bigger one or having a spare one when going on a longer trip. Below table lists the aproximate number of photos that fit on a 128 MB memory card when using the jpg-format:

Resolution \ Quality_____Best_____Good_____Standard
6 mpixel 3008×2000_____34_______70_________117
4mpixel 2400×1600______51_______96_________161
1.5 mpixel 1536×1024___106______173_________271

The above quality rating is based on the compression factor of the jpg format (higher compression results in smaller files, but in lower picture quality).

Now, I wish you good luck with shopping for a new digital camera.

Digital technology has grown by leaps and bounds and in turn, camcorder cases have come a long way. In order to keep up with the digital world, camcorder case manufacturers have made their products technology as well as user friendly. Modular camcorder cases, like those made by M-Rock are created with incredible craftsmanship that make it a long lasting product and have the most features for the money. M-Rock creator Michael Rockwell thought of all the crucial details when he created his line of camcorder cases. Just check out some of theses incredible features.

On the exterior the camcorder cases come with a protective weather jacket, and a triple protection system consisting of a rain-flap, zipper, and front buckle. The cases also have two large belt loops to attach to the waist, or shoulder straps to attach to the back or chest. The cases also have three exterior pockets that allow for easy access to camcorder equipment, and come with bungee straps that can carry other gear like umbrellas and tripods.

The interior of M-Rock camcorder cases is extremely well crafted to provide optimum protection. M-Rock uses thick closed-cell foam, plastic paneling, and a water resistant rigid outer structure to ensure a rigid configuration. The interior is lined with an ultra-soft non-abrasive felt to protect delicate components. Camcorder cases are also available with an optional U-shaped padded lens cradle that can be placed anywhere within the case.

These features are included in all of M-Rocks 15 different sizes and styles of camcorder cases. The modular system allows all of the smaller cases to be attached to any of the larger case. A rigid Velcro system attaches the cases together or to the modular belt with an extremely secure attachment.

M-Rock backs up all their products with a lifetime warranty on workmanship and materials. Their products are long lasting and will protect camcorders and camcorder equipment for years to come. Modular camcorder cases can change the way filmmaking is done, and act like a virtual assistant.

So you have finally decided to backup those precious photos? There are a few ways to backup photos. In this article we will explain how you can backup your photos either yourself at home or by using an online backup service.

Backing up to a DVD/CD

Backing up to a DVD/CD is done by using a DVD/CD writer and software that can burn files on such media. Usually using such solutions requires more technical know-how. Backing up to a DVD/CD is a cheap solution. You can buy such writer drives and software for under a $100 and each DVD/CD media should cost much less than a dollar. One such software that is used by many is from the company Roxio.
When backing up your photos to a DVD/CD please keep the DVD/CD in a safe place a good option would be somewhere out of your home maybe a family members home, with a neighbor you can trust or with a friend. Another thing to remember with DVD/CD backups is that when you take new photos you should remember to refresh your backups. Usually unless your photo album is very big the easiest way to do that is just to burn again you complete collection.

Backing up to an online backup service

As many other services backup also found its way to the Internet. A number of sites provide backup services today for everything from digital photo albums to your word documents. Those services usually charge a monthly fee in the $10 to $20 but some provide a more limited service for free. The idea behind the service is simple: instead of backing up to a DVD/CD you upload your photos to a site and create copies there. The site stores the backups in a safe place far away from your computer. If a disaster happens and you need your files you can simply download them back from the site or have the site send you a DVD/CD with the files (not all provide the latter option). A broadband connection is needed in order to use this option.

There are many advantages to using an online backup service. First they are usually very easy to use. Some provide software that you download and install on your computer. You point to the folder where your photos reside and the software takes it from there. It will make sure new files are uploaded to the backup service and that the backup is always fresh.

Examples of sites that provide such service are: Streamload that starts with a basic FREE 10GB space (approx 10,000 photos at 2 megapixels) and Xdrive that starts from 5GB for $10 a month.

We arent talking gray matter memory here-though that type of memory matters too. We are talking digital camera memory. Digital camera memory is where your image data or photos are stored in your camera.

Most of the newer cameras have limited amounts of internal (sometimes called on-board or built-in) memory. Nearly all digital cameras rely on media or memory cards for storage. A media card is like re-useable film. Fill it with your images, download the images, and then fill the card again and again. Media cards dont wear out easily.

To use a media card, insert it into the corresponding slot on your camera. When you take a picture, the camera saves the image data to the media card. When the card is full, it must be emptied or downloaded to your computers hard drive. There are several ways to do this. One way is to insert the card into the corresponding slot on the computer. Software does the rest. Another way is to connect the camera to the computer using USB or Firewire technology. The latest method is wireless or Wi-Fi technology-no removing the card from the camera or hooking up cables. At this point in time, only the newest camera models use Wi-Fi.

There are several types of media cards available. Your camera will dictate which type you must use. Compact Flash, SmartMedia, SecureDigital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick and xD Picture cards are the most common. Media cards are available with capacities ranging up to 2 gigabytes (GB).

After your images are transferred to you computers hard drive, dont forget to back up your images to a separate storage device. As reliable as hard drives are, failures do occur. A second internal hard drive, an external hard drive, a Zip disk, a CD or DVD is common back up devices. Web sites are available to store back up images for a small fee.

It took the digital camera to make me finally create a photo album. You see, I had a virtual photo album on the computer, one which would show the images that I had taken, and where I could arrange them in whatever configuration I wanted.

I realized then, that I had to create a photo album, or forever lose track of all of my precious memories. I simply didnt know where anything was anymore, so I set off to by a lovely hardbound book to create a photo album to organize all of my most precious pictures so that I could show them.

With the prevalence of digital cameras and the fast pace of life, few people really take the time to create a photo album anymore. This is really a shame.

I could even design covers or text for my digital photo album, which was pretty neat. It was so convenient, that I rarely bothered to look at my old pictures any more. I just wasnt up for the effort of digging through them anymore.

I had always kind of wanted to create a photo album, but had never gotten around to it, and over the years I had become pretty good at hunting for just the image which I wanted in my box of pictures.

Then one day, I was having over my sons fiance. Shes a sweet girl, and I decided to embarrass him and make her feel part of the family by showing off some of his baby pictures. But when I looked for them, try as I might, I couldnt find them at all.

When you create a photo album, you make something that not only showcases your photos, but arranges them in the personal style that shows you really care about what you are doing.

If you make your own photo album, you can not only select what photos to include, but what kind of book to use, how many per page, and where in your home to display it.
I first decided to create a photo album about a year ago.

Ironically, I didnt even think to create a photo album until I had been using my digital camera for a good while. Back when I used to use my normal, analog camera, I would keep all of my pictures in boxes, and I could go into them and look at them whenever I wanted.

Brides and grooms alike are now enlisting the expertise of professionals to get the best digital wedding photography for that special occasion. And why not? They would surely want to have the best photo taken so that the memories will be preserved as long as they live.

Whether you use a digital camera, or a traditional camera for taking wedding photos, you should know that thanks to technological advances, any photographs or negative slides can be scanned, digitally enhanced and burned onto CD for preservation purposes.

Today, people are more dependent on their computers than ever before. With computers, they can easily upload their wedding pictures and share them with family and friends all over the world. This means that you do not have to rely on snail mails just to send your pictures. They can be sent and viewed nearly instantaneous.

This is one of the many advantages of digital photography. If taken properly, you are assured that you and you partner will never regret having used digital photography for your wedding pictures.

Below are some of the tips to get the best digital photography for your wedding. Choose the right background. Photos can really look great once they are shot with the perfect background.

You can use the decorations in the church and in the reception areas as a back draft for your photos. Be sure to fix some scattered decorations so that they will appear simply perfect on photos.

Always remind the photographer to check if the view is good when taking pictures. It does not mean that you have to stand on the same corner or place. The best photographer is able to make even the simplest of background look great on photo if it is taken in the right angle.

Look out for any kinds of glass. Glasses tend to cause reflections in photos. May it be an eyeglass, window or wine glasses. One way or another, they will cause a reflection or brightness to reflect back on the camera it is included in the picture.

To avoid this, the position of the camera can be altered so that it will not directly hit the glass. The photo can be taken sideways or downwards but never on eye level. The perfect timing. Persons being photographed should not always be looking at the camera. And they do not have to be smiling at the lens too.

One way of doing it is to wait for the right moment so that you can have a candid shot at them. You will see that catching persons on film when they are in their candid state is much better than having them wearing a fixed expression.

Candid moments make photos look real and natural. Review each photo. To maximize the memory that your digital camera has, it is best to review every shot taken. There might be duplicates that can be removed so that you can free more space for a different shot.

You will probably want the best and the maximum number of digital wedding photography shots so you need to make the most of the capacity of the digital camera.

Who doesnt take pictures while on vacation? We want pictures of family and friends and we want to capture the flavor of the landscape we are in. Some are interested in the architecture; some are interested in the flora and fauna. Whatever youre interested in you can organize your pictures to really communicate what it was you were seeing at the time.

A good way to organize your pictures is to categorize them. If you take a look at pictures of past vacations youll see an album of everything you saw on that trip. While that is ok, you may find that when someone is looking at them that you are sitting there explaining every picture. After all, you want others to experience some of the flavor and excitement you experienced on your trip.

This is where some good organization comes in. It takes a bit of time but is well worth the effort.

When you have your pictures back, separate them into categories such as, all your pictures of gardens and flowers, pictures of family and friends or your favorite sunsets or interesting architecture you took. Buy albums that suit the categories they are in.

Make a little caption and date of each picture and insert into the correct album. Doing it this way makes it easier to look at and becomes self explanatory. Whether you have visited a particular place or several places, categories with captions make it a lot easier.

(How many times have you looked at photographs of past vacations and wondered for a second where this picture was taken?)

Here is an example of a fascinating category;

My husband used to work for a phone company that installed phones in jails. He took a picture of every jail up and down the east coast. This made for some of the most fascinating albums we have. The architecture of some of these buildings was spectacular ranging from very modern to castle like in nature. It never fails to create interest and conversation and its all in the same album, there is no question about what kind of buildings they are.

Whether you are a seasoned traveler or not and love sunrises and sunsets, you can create an album just for that. Labels and dates complete the picture.

The beauty of theme albums is you can continue to add to them over the years. They are beautiful and easily understood by all.

There are so many categories you can think of. The only limit is your imagination.

Theme albums are very organized and easily understood and are great conversation pieces! Give it a try!

The job of a landscape photographer is to record a scene. Yet, photographers often fail to capture what it felt like to be actually at a scene.

A good landscape photographer arrives at a scene early, and waits for the scene to unfold. Waiting patiently for changing colours and changing mood, which all go along with the change of the weather.

Vital to all of this is light natural light and all the elements it brings to a scene.

To be able to use light correctly and creatively we first must understand it. Once we understand it we can use it to our advantage in creating beautifully, dramatic landscape images.

There are three basic qualities of light: intensity, direction and colour.

Intensity: refers to the strength of light. If the sun is high in the sky, light can be harsh and too strong. Cloudy days bring soft and defused light.

Direction: this refers to light placement. There are three categories of light placement: front, back and side-lighting. Side lighting produces more texture between light and shade.

Colour: the colour of sunlight varies depending upon conditions and time of day. If the sun shines at the beginning or the end of the day, the colour of the light will be much warmer, and will lead to a much more dramatic scene.

While all three are different qualities of light, they all have another important factor in common time of day. Choosing the correct time of day is a foremost in capturing a scene at its best. The intensity of light brings out different colours in a landscape image. Colours in landscape photography depend on light available and also what time you shoot a scene, and where you place your camera.

Early morning shots will cast a red hue in your images. This only lasts a few minutes after sunrise. As the morning progresses the red hue turns to yellow. This normally lasts while the sun is low in the sky. Long shadows are cast along a scene during these early hours. These can add mood to an image. Come mid-day the sun is high in the sky. The shadows are gone. This is the best time of the day for landscape photographers.

As the day turns to evening and the sun gradually falls in the sky, the sun casts stronger colours similar to morning. Sunset can be just as exciting as sunrise.

Time and light come hand in hand. Using both together will most certainly bring out the best in your landscape photographs. We ourselves decide what direction we use, do we use the sun at our backs, or is it better to use it at our side? I prefer side-lighting or facing the sun.

If youre unsure go to a scene and take a few images. Mark the ground so you can place the camera in the exact same spot and return a few hours later. Return to the scene several times and take notes of light direction. Record the different exposures you take your images. Compare the shots from the different times of day, and the answer will unfold in front of you.

Understanding natural light develops your ability to create better images. Youll then start to see the beauty of light and colours in a new and exciting way.

Your company may be considering the benefits of imaging your promotional materials, specially your catalogs. Catalog digital photography can be a useful tool for managing your promotional items, but before doing it so, there are many issues that should be considered before committing to a catalog digital photography project.

Catalog digital photography is one of the processes that are primarily designed to improve the sales of a certain business or company. Digital photography is also one of the fastest growing and most ubiquitous product categories in consumer electronics today.

As our modern technology grows faster and faster each day, particularly in photography, there are many serious photographers, including professionals, who want to take advantage of the unique creative powers available through digital photography and digital image processing.

Digital photography, as opposed to film photography, uses electronic devices to record the image as binary data. This makes it possible to store and as well as edit the images on personal computers, and also the ability to show and delete unsuccessful images immediately on the camera itself. Digital cameras are now selling more than the film cameras; perhaps the reason is that some features that are included in digital cameras are not found in film cameras, such as the ability to shoot video and record audio. Some other devices, such as mobile phones, now include digital photography features.

Using digital photography has advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages of digital photography over traditional film include:

Instant review of pictures, with no wait for the film to be developed: if theres a problem with a picture, the photographer can immediately correct the problem and take another picture.
If one already owns a newer computer, permanent storage on digital media is considerably cheaper than film.
Images may be copied from one media to another without any degradation.
Pictures do not need to be scanned before viewing them on a computer.
Digital cameras can be much smaller than film cameras of equivalent quality.
Digital photography enables you to experiment with the camera settings, different styles of images can be tried out, learnt from and techniques improved all without the expense of film processing.

The disadvantages of digital cameras, includes:

At the same price level digital cameras cannot match the quality of film cameras.
Film cameras are generally more reliable and durable than digital cameras in outdoor environments, especially in wet, cold, and/or humid weather.
There are special types of film, such as for infrared light, that have no equivalent in digital (CCDs are sensitive to Near Infrared).
Film remains more admissible as evidence in court, as it is much harder to manipulate than digital.
Film has a better dynamic range.

As more efficient options for creating and producing digital media proliferate, individuals and organizations increasingly need to control and manage these assets. There are now more reliable companies who are offering a comprehensive and intuitive cataloging methodology, in a single window interface, introducing digital media management and repurposing features such as automatic web generation, slide show, IPTC and EXIF annotations, file conversion, contact sheets, voice annotation, rendering of digital camera raw file formats, and full Apple Script integration in this class of application.

One of the great things about landscape photography is that the possibility is endless on where you can go, what to take a picture of and it all starts with a few steps from your own back door. The horizon is your limit.

Lighting speaks volumes in landscape photography. Getting up with the sun at dawn, watching the animals hurry around as they gather their food for the day, and while the sun is just peaking its face over the background would make for great photo with perfect light. When the sun is on its way down, this is great for a landscape picture of peace and serenity. This time of day is when animals and people are heading home for the night where the land is clear of clutter and the trees, skies and land are open. Shadows will add depth to any photo of the landscape and give it more of a three-dimensional feel to it.

Landscape photography should be relaxing and fun to do. It also requires some time to get the precise composition. When a camera is slightly shifted one way or another, you can see how it will dramatically improve the picture you are looking to take. When it comes to taking a picture of the landscape, taking one photo is just as good as taking ten. You do not have to waste film on something that can be done right the first time, this can be achieved with a bit of patience, and some practice.

When photographing landscapes, give your photo a feeling of depth by including close objects in the frame as well as the distant objects.

A fine lens for landscape photography is the 50 mm lens that comes as standard equipment on many SLR cameras. But if you are seriously interested in photographing landscapes, a good lens to have would be a wide-angle lens.

Losing detail due to camera shake is the biggest problem in landscape photography. So, a tripod and a shutter release cable are very helpful tools to have.

Depth of field is the limitation of perceived sharpness within a photographic image. The greater the depth of field, the more of the image from front to back that appears sharp. An image that is said to have a shallow depth of filed has a short and more specific depth of sharpness.

In photography, careful use of depth of field can be a very powerful tool indeed. It can force viewers to focus only upon that which is sharp, by utilizing a shallow depth of field. As our eyes are not comfortable in viewing unclear images, we then tend to look at the parts of an image that is sharp, and our gaze will then focus upon that part of the image, rendering the other unsharp parts of the image as blurry and not worthy of our attention. This use of a shallow depth of field is particularly well suited to portraiture. As long as the eyes are sharp, most other things can be forgiven if they arent pin sharp. People and animals tend to look at the eyes first, and so the eyes really need to be sharp in nearly all portraiture photography.

Landscape photography is generally at the opposite end of the scale of depth of field, where the vast majority of landscape images require a very long depth of field. This is due to the fact that landscapes generally are trying emmulate an actual scene as we see it, and viewers are usually drawn into the image by its great depth of field.

Depth of field is controlled in two ways. The most commonly used is by aperture control. The smaller the aperture (the larger the number ie. F22), the greater the depth of field. The larger the aperture, (the smaller the number like F2.8), the shallower the depth of field. The apertures inbetween have a depth of field is that is directly proportionate to the aperture selected along the scale. The second means of controlling depth of field is by using a camera or lens that enables the lens to be tilted forward or back. This enables the focusing plane of the lens to be more inclined to the plane of focus of the subject matter, and hence providing a much better depth of field without a change of aperture. It is one of the major reasons for using bellows type cameras, or tilt lenses. With such a camera or lens, one can have a huge level of control over depth of field at any aperture.

Depth of field is also dictated by the focal length of the lens, and the camera format for which the lens is used. For instance, a wide angle lens always has a much greater depth of field than a telephoto lens. A very wide angled lens such as a 14mm lens has a depth of field so great that it almost doesnt require focussing, wheras a 600mm telephoto lens has an extremely shallow depth of field, and unless focussed upon long distance subject matter, the depth of field will always be very limited indeed. On the other end of the scale are macro lenses, which are made to be able to focus very closely to objects. Once you start moving in and start focussing very closely, the depth of field again becomes extremely shallow indeed. The closer you get to the subject, the less the depth of field becomes, and in extreme close-ups just the slightest movement will cause the image to go out of focus entirely.

Are your precious photos safe?

Are you backing up your precious photos? our computers and removable storage media are full with experiences and precious moments. However electronic media is not safe. Hard disks crash and removable media fails.

Disasters can happen. Digital photo albums are vulnerable and if not backed up you lose thousands of photos and a lifetime of moments in just one hard disk crash.

What are backups? backups are just copies of our files that are put in a safe place. Example of such copies can be photos put on a DVD and placed at a friends house. The DVD could of course be placed in your own house but that would be less safe since in case of a disaster in your house you might lose both your computer and the backups.

A few years ago backups were hard to make. You practically had to be a computer guru to figure our those backup software. Today however backup was made easy using a number of software solution and online service. Below you can find two main options for backing up your photo albums: burning them to a DVD/CD or using an online backup service.

Backing up to a DVD/CD

Backing up to a DVD/CD is done by using a DVD/CD writer drive and software that can burn files on such media. Usually using such solutions requires more technical know-how. Backing up to a DVD/CD is a cheap solution. You can buy such writer drives and software for probably under a $100 and each DVD/CD media should cost in the cents. One such software that has been around for a while and used by many is from Roxio.

When backing up your photo albums to a DVD/CD please make sure that you put the DVD/CD in a safe place a good option would be somewhere out of your home maybe a family member, a neighbor you can trust or a friend. Another thing to remember with DVD/CD backup is that when you take new photos you should remember to refresh your backups. Ususally unless your photo album is very big the easiest way to do that is just to burn again you complete collection.

Backing up to an online backup service

As any other service backup found its way to the Internet too. A number of sites provide backup services today for everything from digital photo albums to your word documents. Those services usually charge a monthly fee in the $10 to $20 but some provide a more limited service for free. The idea behind the service is simple: instead of backing up to a DVD/CD you just upload your photos to a site and create copy there. The site stores the backups for you in a safe place far away from your computer. If a disaster happens and you need your files you can simple download them back from the site or ask them to send you a DVD/CD with the files (not all provide the latter option). A broadband connection is needed in order to use this option.

There are many advantages to using an online backup service. First they are usually very easy to use. Some provide software that you download and install on your computer. You then point to the folder where your photos reside and the software takes it from there. It will make sure new files are uploaded to the backup service and that your backup is always fresh.

Examples of sites that provide such service are: Streamload that starts with a basic FREE 10GB space (approx 10,000 photos at 2 megapixels) and Xdrive that starts from 5GB for $10 a month.

Many dream of photography school. It is an art and a passion that few people can take and make use of. But, those that do, really can amaze the world with what they can capture on a single roll of film. But, how can you find the right school to get into? Having the right photography school on your resume really can make a bit of difference. So, take your time in choosing the right school for your choice. Chances are, youll have many options to consider when you choose correctly.

Here are some things to consider about the photography school that you will choose:

Does the school provide you the best possible plan of study? It needs to offer you what you want to learn now and in the future. This will help determine how well you do in the end.

You will need to consider the format of the school as well. If you are to take photography school lessons through the college, will you be required to get a degree or will you simply take classes to gain knowledge without a degree? This is up to you, but it is also up to the school to let you in as well.

You also need to feel comfortable with the school. This is important because in art, you need the freedom to make choices. While hard and difficult, you will want to have the freedom to do as you need to.

Youll want to find the photography school that offers the right scholarships and financial aid as well. Not all of us can afford the highest levels of education, but when you choose wisely and with good financial intentions, you can choose the right photography school.

Photography school is waiting for you. Are you ready to get started?

You love taking photographs and people keep telling you that you have a great eye. How difficult is it really to make money from your photographs?

Theres a lot to taking good photos and theres no way that one article could cover all the aspects of a good photo. This is an overview on how to get started taking making money with your hobby.

Before you start you will need:

- a decent camera doesnt have to cost the earth but it can be all the difference when it comes to making beautiful photos

- to understand the different features on your camera learning to use the special features on your camera can make all the difference.

- to keep your eyes peeled for good photo opportunities at all times.

When judging photos generally the three main elements are judged. The crispness/ sharpness of the image, the composition and the subject.

The sharpness of your images can be improved by focusing properly. Zoom all the way in to the intended subject and focus. Then zoom out to the desired distance. The focus should be sharper.

The composition: whole books have been written about composition and there is a broad and fascinating science behind it. In general the law of thirds should serve you well when trying to make a well composed shot. Divide the frame into 3×3 lined sections. All the action should center along the lines. This means the subject should never be entirely in the center of the frame. When trying to compose your shot always try to balance the elements within the frame. You will get a feel for this with practice.

The subject when taking commercial photos this is obviously very important. You will want to photograph a wide variety of subjects.

Anyone can make a good living from selling stock photos. Look online or even set up your own.

You must remember that selling anything takes work. You will need to spend a great deal of time marketing yourself and your work.

If you are serious about making money from your photos then you need to start putting together a portfolio containing your best work. Having a portfolio on hand can be very useful when wanting to impress prospective buyers. Consider putting together an online portfolio to reach an international market faster. You could even set up an online sales system selling your photos.

If you really know a lot about photography consider sending some of your best work in to one of the photographic magazines with a step by step account of your procedure and equipment used. Its worth the effort because you gain valuable exposure as an expert in your field.

You could use some more unconventional methods to generate cash with your camera. What about making screensavers from beautiful photos? If you dont have the technical know how you can ask someone to show you quite easily. Many people make good money this way.

There are all kinds of other markets you can consider selling your photos to. Online magazines, print magazines, newspapers, travel brochures and books all need photos. Keep your eyes open for any publications that appeal to your niche.

All thats left to do it grab your camera and start shooting!

It seems to be that the bigger the location that you reside in the more the law-breaking degree increases. With the use of digital photography and infrared digital photography you have the fortune of catching some amazing photographs of criminals being arrested and there is no greater comforting feeling than knowing you made a small contribution in aiding the law enforcement capture some of the a few law breaking members of our society. To take a few of them off of the streets at a time ensures that our lives and the lives of our children will be in less danger. I know that you just as most others wants nothing more than to have a safer environment for our future and our well being as we know it.

Wether you are using daytime infrared digital photography or nighttime infrared digital photography the right lens and all the right factors will in fact give you the opportunity to create just the right digital photograph you are hoping to come up with. Youll need to remember with digital infrared photography that there are few matters you want to take in consideration in getting that great photograph. Never jump the gun too rapidly on photographing until you have all of your facts straight with the type of results that you are hoping for your digital photography shoots.

Think about what type of filter you will be utilizing, make certain that each of your settings are set at their appropriate availability for the precisest detailed appearance. The direction the objects in your digital photographs may be moving will give you an idea on what kind of angle you should be photographing from. Depending upon what type of filter that you seleceted will influence the quality of your printed digital photograph.

The lighting will obviously deliver a very dramatic effect in how your digital photographs expose themselves. Of course the poorer your lighting then the longer it will take for your photographs to expose. They call for a longer amount of time if the light isnt strong enough to make the photograph its correct imaging appearance. The correct lighting is real important in your digital photography success. However, I realize that with spur of the minute photographs being taken, you dont always possess the time you might want in order to capture that perfect lighting.

Exactly like any of the professionals out there you also want to apply your digital photography skills to their highest degree of accuracy. Try and be really creative with your digital infrared photography skills in photographing the objects that you desire to create on print.

Check over with your owners manual prior to you choosing to attach an infrared lens to your digital camera for your digital photography purposes. These infrared light and filters may cause a few difficult problems with your digital camera if you have not checked out this first before adding this accessary. It could completely mess up your lens and create some serious electronics malfunctions if youre not careful when choosing to do so. The most crucial thing about infrared lens is to never under whatever circumstances look through this infrared lens with your own eyes. This decision could cost you your beloved eye sight

If you are only going to buy one filter for your landscape photography a polarizing filter is the one youll use most. A polarizing filter can be used with colour or black and white and is probably the most important filter on the market today.

Lets take a quick look at the science behind it. A polarizing filter is made up of two pieces of glass which when rotated cut out all glare on non-metallic surfaces. Light travels in waves these waves travel in all directions and at different rates and speeds. The polarizing filter works by limiting the amount of waves that enter your lens. You decide how many waves pass through your lens by rotating the filter.

The polarizing filter is most effective with side lighting.

For example: if you are taking a picture of a scenic lake area and there is a messy reflection of the clouds in the lake; it will be too much of a distraction in the final picture. This can be simply removed by rotating the polarizing filter til the clouds disappear. You can view the filter working in the viewfinder of your camera.

The polarizing filter will also darken the blue sky to give it a strong rich colour. It will make mist stand out and can be also used to give fast flowing water a misty effect.

You dont have to rotate the filter the full amount to get the maximum affect you need, sometimes you will only have to rotate it a small amount. You can decide best for yourself by viewing through your viewfinder while you rotate the polarizing filter.

This filter is not just for a landscape photographer.

There are many different uses for a polarizing filter, which make it so important for all photographers. Property photographers would find this filter extremely handy when taking an image of a shop front, the polarizing filter will remove glare that reflects off the glass.

Take extreme care when calculating exposure. Remember that you will have to add two stops of light when using the polarizing.

All the worlds cameras, films and other photographic equipment are no more than tools for making landscape pictures. Cameras dont think for themselves. Whether we use digital or film camera, the same photographic principles apply.

We dont have to stick to many rules to produce great landscape images, but knowing what they are will make your pictures more successful. There are two salient points in landscape photography: how to compose your image, and how to use available natural light in any given situation.

Lets start off with light: There are three basic qualities of light: intensity, direction and colour.

Understanding natural light will develop your ability to see. You will start to see the beauty of light in a different and exciting way.

In landscape photography it is very important to take care with composition. A normal scene can be transformed by paying close attention to detail. Composition is all about how you arrange the elements in front of you.

Here are a few ideas in which you may find useful.

Lead with lines: To lead with lines into the main part of the scene will draw your viewer into your image. These lines dont have to be straight. Lines, such as tracks, riverbanks or fences, may work successfully.

Foreground interest: Simple foreground objects can give your landscape a greater sense of depth. Use a small aperture (f/22) to keep the entire scene in focus.

Natural frames: Frame your scene with the elements all around you. This will focus attention on the main part of the picture. Trees make great natural frames.

These are just a few essential guidelines, and combined with a good eye, you have all you need to get the best out of photography especially landscape photography. These are just a few rules to get you started, but like all rules, they are there to be broken.

Todays cameras make taking pictures a lot easier than the ones of yesterday. There is always room for improvement, however. Use the following tips to help make your photos go from acceptable to great.

1. Always be aware of the background.

You dont want to find trees growing out of peoples heads or a passing vehicle to draw attention from your subject. Sometimes moving your subject just a couple steps to either side can make all the difference.

2. Use available light.

If your digital camera has an option to turn the flash off and its light enough outside to read a book, then use the available light, and turn the flash off. In general camera flashes are too harsh for human skin and make all of us look pale. Indoors, where there isnt enough daylight, place your subject by a window and use your fill flash feature.

3. Aim your camera slightly down at the persons face.

Also dont shoot just face on to the person, try a little to the side, a three quarter view, so that you see more of their face. Remember camera higher looking down and a three quarter view, it will slim your subject.

4. Remember your focus.

Get closer to your subject. Fill the frame with your subject and there will be no doubt as to what the picture is saying.

6. Never put your subject dead center.

Put your just slightly off center; not a lot just a little. When youre shooting groups of people, find the imaginary center line of your group and put that line just a bit off center in your view through your lens or screen.

Following these tips wont turn you into an award-winning photographer today, but you will be on your way to better, more powerful photographs that others will comment on for years to come.

I compare my kitten with my kids and the love for my kids is equal to the love I have for my kitten, and that is why I make time to take my kitten pictures as my kittens grown into a lovely adult cat.

When anyone visits my home, they notice how well groomed my kitten is, and how well treated, and they also notice the collection of pictures I have of my kitten, I place my kitten pictures all over my home.

Well, this article isnt about me or my kitten, its about taking better kitten pictures, and here are 5 tips for doing just that:

1. Always try to avoid sudden movements
If you wish to take better kitten pictures, then you should learn not to make any sudden movements and always use better quality high speed film, and use a digital camera with no shutter sound.

2. Lower your camera angle to the height of your kitten
Any kitten picture you wish to take, should be at an angle that is equal to the height of your kitten. This is for much better pictures and also some very cute facial expression that your kitten shows once they start staring down the lens.

3. Always make sure your kitten is well fed
This tip is the most important of all, it is very difficult to take kitten pictures of a hungry kitten, they wont stand still long enough for you to be able to get one shot. That is why it is so important to make sure that the kitten has just been fed, before you try to take any picture of your kitten. Wait at least 15 minutes after the you just fed your kitten. It is also very wise to study your kitten movements, that way you will be sure when you kitten naps, and what time is best to start taking your kitten picture.

4. Always have a couple of their favorite treats on hand
A tip I leant online, was to always have a couple of your kitten favorite treats with you, that way you will give them a treat anytime they start to get rowdy.

5. Try to keep thing simple
The best kitten pictures I have taken was when they least expected it. I try to keep things simple and never ever try to take too many pictures at a time. The kitten will become frustrated and walks away, and it is very difficult after that to get your kitten to stand still for any more pictures.

Now you that you have discovered a couple of my simple trick for taking better kitten pictures, you can visit my website and post those kitten pictures online, so the world can see the love we have for our cats.

If you are an aspiring model, especially a beginner, youll want to read this article before making any
contacts to model agencies. Its tough enough pursuing a modeling career when you are prepared but almost
impossible if you arent!

The old cliche that says, Ill just go down to the corner of Main or to the mall and get discovered. is totally
bogus! Believe it or not youre going to have to do some honest work to create a need for your modeling
services. Contrary to the statement above, most models are not discovered on the street corner; they were
discovered by making contacts.

Even though you will be turned down by some agencies, youre in good company. Id like to share some
failure stories with you.

1. Elvis Presley was turned down and told that he would never make it as a singer.

2. A music group was turned down by a major record company because groups using guitars are on their
way out stated the company. This group was The Beatles!!

3. Tyra Banks was turned down by 4 out of 5 agencies and barely squeaked through the fifth door. Also
turned down at one time or another were most of the other superstars.

But, they all had one thing in common, dedication and persistence. They didnt take the first no as an insult.
If you are turned down by an agency, go on to the next, and the next. Remember, its always too soon to
quit!

The biggest question I can think to ask is; How committed are you to doing the really tough work involved
to become a model?

The world of modeling is very competitive and only those willing to put in the hours of practice and the
other time it takes to make contact after contact with model agencies will be able to work in the modeling
industry.

Contacting Local Model Agencies Here are five tips if you plan to promote yourself locally

If you plan to promote yourself locally put together a professional portfolio and keep contacting model
agencies & photographers who may need your services.

1. Set goals for what you want and keep at it.

2. Steer clear of agencies who ask for large sums of money for so-called training unless you feel that you
just want that particular experience.

There are plenty of legitimate agencies out there. You may want to try doing a search online for local model
agency listings in your state.

3. Advice from consumer advocates, former (modeling) customers and ex-agency employees for avoiding
modeling scams:

Avoid paying fees in advance. Legitimate agencies make their money from commissions. If youre asked to
pay for extra composite cards, check out the company with the Better Business Bureau and state consumer
officials.

If you are asked to sign a contract, take it home first. If they refuse, walk away.

Ask for reference lists of clients and ask what kinds of jobs the agency books.

4. Talk to other working models whenever possible. They can give you valuable insight and maybe steer you
to a good agency or clients.

5. Always take someone with you when going to interviews or photo shoots. SAFETY FIRST! I cant
stress this enough!

These ideas are just the beginning in your modeling career! Take your time and learn everything you can
about modeling and the agencies before jumping in and youll have an easier time than those who dont.
Success in modeling will take effort on your part. Go for it!

Pictures and graphics are one of the most important elements that a company uses to create brand awareness and communicate its message. Ever wonder where those images come from? The general term for these images is stock photos and the evolution of digital photography has caused a revolution within the stock photo industry. In our business of selling trade show displays and designing graphics for these displays we are constantly challenged with how to develop a graphical message that is suitable for trade show graphics. Trade show graphics are considered large format printing and it has its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to finding high resolution photos that when printed look presentable. Many of you have probably taken an old 35 mm picture and blown it up to a poster size graphic only to see the quality deteriorate that it only looks good when your fifteen feet away. Imagine taking that same picture and making it 7 feet tall by 10 feet wide. Yikes!

If youre the likes or Nike or McDonalds its no big deal to arrange professional photographers to take high resolution digital photos for any type of ad campaign, brochure or billboard. If youre the average small business in America then you have a bit of a challenge finding images that wont break the bank account. For most of our clients this is where the Sticker Shock of buying stock images comes into play.

So how does one get high resolution images for displays? Before the turn of the century, that is the year 2000, the world of stock photography was dominated by a few industry giants like Getty Images and Corbis and still today these two companies can supply you with just about anything. For example, lets say you want a high resolution picture of Britains two man bob sleigh team, competing at international sporting event, 1948, St. Moritz, Switzerland. Youll have to get this type of image from one of the major suppliers. In fact heres the link for this image on Getty.

Britains two man bob sleigh team image

There are two types of images in the stock photography world. The bob sleigh image is Rights Managed which means you have to detail how, where and when youll be using this image for marketing or advertising purposes. For a trade show display this image would cost you anywhere from $975.00 $1350.00 per year for one display. This is where the sticker shock happens! The other type of image is called Royalty Free which means you can use it for most things and only have to pay a flat fee. There are lots of variations in Royalty Free so make sure you understand the conditions of using the photograph. Royalty Free images are usually priced in the range of $180.00 $350.00. Sounds pretty good until you realize that you may need 10 photos to achieve the design you want.

What if there was a way to reduce that pricing to $10.00 per image? Almost sounds to good to be true, but it isnt. Digital cameras and the Internet have completely revolutionized the way high resolution images are being bought and sold and this new segment is called Microstock. Microstock photo websites are where individuals can buy and sell their high quality images. The average consumer can easily purchase a professional level digital camera and with a little training can create all kinds of unique images to sell, especially when you use your photography skills along with the power of some photo editing software like PhotoShop. The two best known Microstock photo websites are iStockPhoto and ShutterStock. Both of these sites offer hundreds of thousands of high quality photos for large format printing purposes. These images are still Royalty Free, but Extended licenses are available when you print large quantities of brochures or other marketing materials.

If you purchased Royalty Free photos from one of the major industry websites then the photos in the design could easily range from $1980.00 $3850.00. If you purchased Rights Managed photos you would spend $10,750.00 $14,850.00.

This cost savings has gotten the attention of the big guys to the extent that iStockPhoto was recently purchased by Getty Images for $50 million dollars.

So if you need high quality high resolution photos for Trade Show Displays, Exhibits or Booths or any other large format printing job make sure to check out all your options including the Microstock world.

Tips For Photographing Wildlife
by Roberta Hochreiter

To get good shots of animals and birds, you will have to learn to be quick in setting up and framing your shots. Waiting until you get out in the wilderness to learn these tricks is not a good idea. What I found to be very helpful was practicing on my cats and on birds in my yard or local parks. You learn to anticipate their behavior and react fast to get the good shots. Here are some tips on how to get the best shots of animals and birds in the wild.

Practice taking shots of moving targets. Learning how to pan moving targets will allow you to take dramatic photographs with a sense of speed.

Keep your camera handy and set up for unexpected encounters. Make sure you have fully charged camera batteries and plenty of film or memory.

Before you go into an area, read up on what kinds of animals and birds are commonly found there. Learn all you can about these animals and birds. This will help you know where to look to find them and what kinds of behavior to expect.

Learn to walk and move quietly and practice freezing your position so that your presence is not startling or threatening to the animal.

Learn to be observant of everything around you using all your senses. With a little practice, you will gain the ability to be aware of small movements, unusual colors or sounds, even smells that can tip you off to the presence of an animal or bird even when they are well camouflaged. I cannot believe how many times Ive watched people walk right by wildlife without noticing them. Hiking with an awareness of your surroundings enhances your experience immeasurably.

In the wild, telephoto lenses are basically a must. This brings you in a little closer without scaring the animals. The use of a tripod is not always mandatory, if you have enough light you will be able to shoot at a fast shutter speed to eliminate shake. Some telephoto lens have vibration reduction technology but are considerably more expensive.

When you photograph animals and birds, make sure the focus is sharpest on their eyes.

Shoot small animals from a lower angle.

The best times of the day for viewing and photographing wildlife are early in the mornings and just before dark. This is when wildlife is usually most active and the light is the most dramatic.

Try to keep the sun at your back so that the light falls directly on your subject.

Using all these tips will help you improve your nature photography. The very most important thing is practice, practice, practice and dont forget to enjoy yourself!

Roberta Hochreiter lives in the Pacific Northwest in Washington state and is an avid photographer, hiker and backpacker with 5 years experience.

This software program can help you even if you are trying to export an image from your digital video camera. If you have your own digital video and would like to capture some pictures from it you will receive as a result images with little tin lines that are crossing thru the captured picture. You can use your Paint Shop Pro software to remove (Deinterlace) this lines from your digital image. This tutorial is written for Paint Shop Pro version 9.01. In some of the other versions may be have a little difference, but the main principle is the same.

There are some easy steps that you can do to make your pictures to look like much better than they are now.
Lets see first a picture, which is made with a high quality digital camera (10.1 mega pixels, maximum quality with automatic settings). Even if you think that it is perfect we can show you that it is not. You can make a test by clicking the image below with a right mouse button and to save image to your computer. Or you can take any of your digital images and to make a test with it.

Step One: Fix the light/ dark, contrast or sharp problems to your image. First thing that you must to do after opening the program, called Paint Shop Pro is to open the image in the main program window. To do it choose from the top menu File Open and locate the image on your PC. Now, when the image is opened you can make a simple test if you think that the image is little bit dark or gray or even too light you can choose from the top menu Enhance Photo. When you click the button you will see a falling menu choose the first option (it is first if your settings are by default) the option is called One step photo fix. Let the program to make the changes. Now you can see that your image is much clear. The colors are more realistic and the light is much better than it was before. This option can make your objects much sharpen if it is necessary for better contrast and vision or soft lines if its necessary. And the good thing is that these changes are absolutely automated just by pressing one button from your menu. Of course, you can make the changes manually, if you dont like the automatic results. There are separate options for setting the color, sharpness, contrast, softness, etc. with values that can be set manually. Now if you want, you may save your new picture.
Tip: We recommend you to save the picture with a different name for example if your original image name is image.jpg you can save your new name as image-a.jpg. This can be done from the top menu choose File / Save as ? This way you can keep your original picture file and youll be able to compare both files and changes that you made. Dont forget that the software programs can make mistakes too, so sometimes you may be will prefer the original image quality and settings. This is another reason to save your new digital files with different names.

ferent names.

These days, with the advancements in technology, more and more people are buying cameras. Its very easy to own one because of the improvements in ease of use and maintenance. We dont have to buy rolls of film just to use a camera. Its also easier to take great pictures, because we can preview the image thats going to be taken and if its not up to standard, it can be deleted in just a press of a button. No film is wasted, and the photos come out as we want them.

Its normal practice to bring a camera everyday, especially those that are compact and lightweight. This is so that every important moment is captured and thus, preserved throughout time. With this in mind, more and more people are getting interested in photography and enjoying it. Even non-professional photographers can take very good pictures, and there shouldnt be any surprise if there are more people who join photography contests, whether its for the prize, the recognition, or just for fun.

If youre one of the many people who enjoy photography, and someday you hope to enter and win a contest, here are some photography contest tips and advice:

Follow all the rules of the contest
There is always a different set of rules for every contest, and you should be aware of them first and foremost. Familiarize yourself with them and follow them to the letter. You might not understand why some rules are there, but dont assume you can just disregard them. They are there for a reason. Its better to follow the rules rather than have your work returned to you because you did not follow the rules.

Research on past entries
Researching on past winning entries will help you learn more about the contest that you want to join and its standards. If you know more about the standards and the judges basis for a good photograph, youll have a better edge against the other contestants. You also might get inspired from studying the past entries.

Study the categories
There are different categories in every contest, and you must consider the requirements of each category before submitting an entry under the category that youve chosen. Your photograph should be focused on the categorys topic. Many entries get disqualified for not following the requirements, and its sad because the photographer may be talented, but the entry is not even seen by the judges because of a technicality. For example, there are categories that might require your picture to have a few items at the background of the photographs main focus. One missing item may hurt your chances in the contest.

Consider your work with a critical eye
You might have a photograph that youre really fond of. You might even consider it as your best, because of its meaning to you. Remember, your contest entry will be judged by many different people who are strangers to you. They dont know the story and circumstances behind your favorite work, and they dont care. They are also given a set of guidelines in choosing entries, and each of them has unique standards. If you want a good chance of winning, better submit photographs that are good on all technical factors. For your entry to stand out, your subject should be doing some actions. A subject that is doing something is more noticeable and has more depth compared to a subject that is on a pose.

Send only your best work
There are contests that allow multiple entries, and if you plan on submitting more than one entry per category, its better to submit just a few of your best work, rather than submit a lot of entries that include a few decent, but lackluster, photographs. This is to protect how the judges think of your best photograph. If you include a few second-rate photographs, chances are the judges opinion on those photographs might dampen their opinion on your best entry. Instead of your best photograph standing out, it might get buried under the mediocre ones.

Its easier now to take pictures, and its even easier to prepare for a contest if you only study how. Apply these photography contest tips and advice, and improve your chances of winning a photography contest.

Photo dealers, like cameras, come in a staggering variety of sizes, types, and quality grades. Whether theyre found in small, local camera stores, big department-store chains, discount houses, or mail-order companies, they all have one thing in common-theyd like to make a sale.

At the elite end of the dealer spectrum are salespeople who know what theyre talking about, honestly want to help you get the best equipment for your purpose, take time explaining features and options, and have competitive prices. At the other end are quick-buck artists who are simply out to make the most profit in the least amount of time and could hardly care less about your long-term satisfaction or repeat business. Many dealers, especially those with the lowest prices, fall somewhere in between these two extremes.

What constitutes an ideal dealer? It really depends on you. If youre generally in the market for new equipment and know exactly what you want before walking into the store, your most important criteria may be low prices, reliability and liberal return policies. If you expect your dealer to take time providing information and guidance, it may be well worth spending a few bucks extra to go to a full-service dealer.

Whatever type of dealer you choose, when you find a good, honest one who steers you right, stick with him-a photo enthusiast can have no better ally. And if you do encounter one of the dishonest, discourteous bad apples, run for the nearest exit or hang up the phone. The following tips should help you to figure out which dealers are which.

1. Do your homework. Dealing with salespeople is a lot easier if you know what equipment you want and have a good idea of what it should cost. To narrow down your selection, mull over your photographic needs and wants, then read test reports, news reports, brochures, and ads on equipment that interests you. To check prices, look them up in newspaper or other print ads or scan the mail-order ads in this publication. Once you cull your choices, examine the products in person.

2. Ask questions. The quickest way to find out whether a dealer knows what hes talking about and is honest is to ask a lot of questions. A good dealer will know the features of the equipment hes selling and be will to explain differences between competing brands. His opinions will be presented in a reasonable manner. Beware of dealers who disparage major brands with strong language or try to foist off little-known brands. Be suspicious of dealers who are loath to sell you what you want, refuse to honor their advertised prices, or charge extra for normally included items like lens caps and battery covers.

3. Stand your ground. Once youve come to an informed decision on buying a particular piece of equipment, stick with it. Dont let yourself be switched to something else because the item you want isnt in stock or you can get a great deal. And dont settle for the salesmans demonstrator-you want a fresh camera in a box.

4. Keep your cool. If a dealer says something outrageous, has an obvious hidden agenda, is impolite, ignores you, or takes you for a fool, dont get mad or waste your time arguing with him. Just depart gracefully. Dont go back. And warn all your friends about his business. If youre actually cheated, report it to the Better Business Bureau and local or state consumer-protection agencies.

5. Check the record. Before you make a large purchase from a store unknown to you or in a strange city call the local Better Business Bureau, consumer-protection agency, or the consumer advocate of the local newspaper. Even good stores may have a few complaints on file, but if you find that a store has records of excessive problems, steer clear of it.

6. Expect the expected. Dont expect the harried clerk at a discount store to debate the fine points of four different point-and-shoots in the midst of the lunch-hour crunch. Dont exprect the mail-order phone salesperson to be a technical whiz who knows exactly which autofocus system does what. In short, be reasonable. Dont pay more than you have to, but dont expect the local camera store that lets you browse to meet the low discount price to the penny.

7. Be fair. Dont spend 45 minutes picking a dealers brain and then buy the camera down the street for $10 less. If his price is way out of line, tell him so and give him a chance to make the sale. Not only will this assuage your conscience, it will encourage good dealers to stay that way.

With the evolution of the digital camcorder you no longer have to deal with the grainy amateurish home movies you have been used to. Now you can even edit, copy, and email your movies right on your computer.

You can now get much higher quality videos by using digital camcorders which offer good to excellent picture quality, excellent sound, ease of use, and compactness. Some camcorders even double as a still camera for photos.

Sony is still the leader in camcorders with many models available in many different formats. Some other top brands include famous camera maker, Canon as well as JVC, Panasonic, and Samsung.

The most popular format these days is the Mini-DV format, which is the camcorder I personally use. Other formats available include the DVD-RAM and DVD-R.

Lets look a little more in depth at some of the formats available.

MinDVs in my opinion give you a lot of bang for your buck. Some of the newer models can fit in a shirt pocket and they record super-high quality images. The typical recording length of a miniDV tape is 60 minutes and the cost per tape is around $6.00. Prices for these camcorders vary from $300 to $2,000. Expect to pay more for the smaller versions with higher zooms.

The Digital 8 or D8, gives you the quality of digital using Hi8 or 8mm cassettes. These record at a faster speed so a 120 minute cassette lasts 60 minutes on SP. These camcorders run from $300 to $800.

The disc based camcorders use a DVD disc, which offers durability that tape cannot. These camcorders record standard MPEG-2 video, which is the same format in commercial DVD videos.
Recording time varies from 20 minutes to 60 minutes depending upon the quality level you choose. DVD-R is supposed to be compatible with most DVD players but are write once only, the rewritable DVD-RW is better but also more expensive. Expect to pay $700-$1,000 for these camcorders.

So how do you decide which one to go with?

First decide on your price range and how you will be using the camcorder. If you are using it to record sporting events you will probably want one with a long recording time and a good optical zoom. The tape based camcorders will usually bring you better picture quality, so bear that in mind. With digital formats that use MiniDV, Digital 8, or MicroMV tapes, you can get at least 60 minutes of recording on a standard cassette. MiniDV and D8 cassettes are the least expensive and easiest to find.

Most flip out LCD viewers measure 2.5 inches on the diagonal, but some are larger, adding about $100 to the price. If the viewer seems small and difficult to use or suffers from too much glare, consider trading up to a similar model or a different brand to get a better screen.

If youre buying your first camcorder, concentrate on finding the best one for your budget, regardless of format.

The race for mega pixels has started and there is no way to stop it. Every few months cameras with more pixels hit the market. The manufacturers want you to dump your old camera and buy the newest and greatest one after all arent 10 mega pixels better than just 8? Apparently the answer is not that simple.

As with many other things when it comes to mega pixels more is not necessarily better. There are many considerations when buying a camera and the number of mega pixels is just one of them.
One of the most important things to consider is usage. More mega pixels are good for people who plan to print photos (especially enlargements) or for people who need to zoom in and grab fine details from a big photo. If the main usage of the photos is watching them on your computer screen and maybe printing a few 4X6 prints than 2 mega pixels is more than enough (yes? just 2). Most screen resolutions are 1024X768 so even when viewing the photo in full screen mode you can only view 1024X768 < 1 mega pixels. A 2 mega pixels 4X6 photo print will have a DPI higher than 300 which is more than enough for a good quality print.

If you plan to use your photos for enlargements than a rule of thumb is to be able to print at least 300DPI resolution. The following is a table for different print sizes and the needed mega pixels for such print quality:

page 4X6 2MP
page 5X7 3MP
page 8X10 7MP
page 11X14 14MP
page 16X20 28MP
page 20X30 54MP

Another practical consideration is price and budget: Usually the more mega pixels the more expensive the camera is. Unless your budget is infinite when buying a camera you make a compromise between mega pixels and other features. For example is it better to spend money on more mega pixels or on better lenses? Or maybe instead of getting the latest number of mega pixels get an external flash for low light photography? When buying a camera try to predict what and how you will use it. In many cases a lower mega pixels sensor with better a lens will result in a much better photo than a high mega pixels with an inferior lens. Shop around and make sure that you get the best package in terms of mega pixels and other features.

To conclude when shopping for a camera it is best not to be a victim of the mega pixels race. Although it is generally a good thing to have a high number of pixels there are many other factors that influence the quality of the photos taken and the choice of the right camera for you. Lenses, battery life, light sensitivity, sensor technology used, external flash and many other features are not less important as the number of mega pixels. When shopping for a camera make sure that you consider the whole package and not use the number of mega pixels as a quality indicator for your buy.

Finding the right digital camera can be a hard decision for you to make because there are so many different types, brands, styles, and sizes available on the digital camera market today. This article is going to show you the specific things you should consider when purchasing a digital camera.

The first thing that must be done is to budget the amount of money you are willing to spend on a digital camera and stick to it. Doing so will allow you to shoot directly for the cameras that are in that price range or lower. A digital camera can come with so many different, attractive features that it is easy to be lured into something you simply cannot afford.

Another key aspect in choosing the right digital camera for you is to consider how you intend to use the camera. This is important because a digital camera can snap pictures at different speeds. If you simply intend to take pictures of your family and friends, this may not have much bearing for you. However, if you intend to take photographs of moving objects, you will need a camera that will snap a picture at a higher speed.

Next, consider the memory of the digital camera and how often you will use it. These two combined should not be taken lightly. If you are simply going to use the camera every now and again, a smaller digital camera will be suitable. However, if you will use it often and maybe even professionally, you will need a camera that can carry a large number of photographs at one time.

Consider your experience in using cameras. If you are a beginning photographer choose a digital camera that is uncomplicated and easy to use. You will also need to consider the lenses. Are they appropriate for both close up and distance shots or will you need a separate lens for either one? Choosing to purchase the separate lens is of course a personal decision, based upon how you intend to use the camera.

While considering these aspects, use the power of the internet and conduct online research. This will allow you to check out different brands and styles, making your decision a little easier. However, it is recommended that you actually visit the store and actually hold and inspect the digital camera. This will ensure that you are getting a digital camera that is just right for you.

Finally, choose a digital camera that you are comfortable with and is affordable. It is not a wise decision to place yourself in debt just because the digital camera offers all of these cool features. Choose one that you are happy with and will work well for your needs.
